According The Plastic Surgery Group out of Britain, one of the top cosmetic procedures to continue to gain traction in 2017 will be breast augmentations using smaller implants and the trend toward smaller nipples. The group, made up of members of the British Association of Aesthetic Surgeons and the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, has predicted that 2017 will be the year of the smaller bust and areola.

London plastic surgeon Mo Akhavani, MD, says that the increase in more understated implants stems from the desire to achieve a more natural, proportionate look. “Smaller implants and nipples are definitely a trend,” says Dr. Akhavani. “Over the last 20 years everyone wanted massive implants. That was ‘the look,’ however, we now understand more about large implants and their detrimental effects on chest wall contouring and remodeling as well as breast tissue atrophy.”

Vero Beach, FL, plastic surgeon Alan Durkin, MD, agrees and has seen firsthand how the trend has changed in North America over the years as well. Dr. Durkin says the cultural focus toward fitness has made women more conscious about the long-term practicality of their new breasts.

“I personally think there is a growing trend toward more outdoor activity in this country, and women want a functional implant rather than a cumbersome one,” says Dr. Durkin. “This leads to smaller breast implant diameters and volumes.”

As for nipple size, Dr. Akhavani says it’s all part of a new slender aesthetic that is heavily promoted on social media. “The new body look now is the ultra-toned, shredded athletic type—just look at Instagram and see how many thousands of women add photos of them doing weights, etc. Smaller nipples and implants complement this new trend of a lean body.”

Dr. Durkin adds, “This smaller nipple trend has been consistent for years in our practice and is a very common request. I think the ideal nipple size in most women’s minds is a smaller-sized areola with a perky nipple. Areolar reduction is going to stay in vogue, no question.”
