We’re taking a ride out west to explore the lived-in volume that’s dominating the trends. Enter Wild West hair, which is all about big, bold styles with tousled strands. Ahead, we’re diving in to uncover how to nail these effortlessly Western-inspired looks. And the best part for Yellowstone fans? This trend is, without a doubt, Beth Dutton-approved.
What Is Wild West Hair?
Like Beth Dutton out on the ranch, the look we’re going for is wind-swept and natural-looking. “The Wild West look is one of my favorites—it’s stylish yet effortless,” says celebrity hairstylist Gonn Kinoshita. “I think the key is that it should look effortless. It’s all about having that wild, lived-in texture as if you’ve been out in the elements.”
“Cowboycore is all about texture, volume and a bit of edge,” adds master stylist and owner of Second Floor Salon Rogério Cavalcante. “The look combines a slightly messy style with loose waves, undone braids and natural volume. It’s effortless but with a touch of intentional styling. Accessories like hats or scarves can also enhance the Wild West feel while giving more room to experiment with styles that can hold up under them.”

Wild West hair is obviously Western-inspired, so braided looks, hats and scarves are all fair game. “I’d go for braided styles or a naturally textured, slightly untamed look to keep it authentic but simple,” Kinoshita advises.
“Braids are another go-to,” Cavalcante agrees. “Either small ones tucked into loose waves or a more undone braid with face-framing pieces left out for that extra relaxed touch.”
How to Nail Wild West Hair Volume
Getting Wild West hair right comes down to getting big volume that still looks lived-in. “For this style, I love using Balmain Hair’s Volume Mousse ($61) and Texturizing Salt Spray ($58) as a base,” Kinoshita advises. “Then, I add styling powder and matte paste.”
“Living Proof Full Dry Volume & Texture Spray ($36) is a great choice for wild west hair,” Cavalcante says. “This spray gives hair a touch of grit and volume, so it looks purposely messy and a bit wild. You can also add Roz Root Lift Spray ($42) to refresh and add volume at the roots.”
