My scalp does a lot of heavy lifting. Between hot tools, slicked-back styles that call for plenty of product and the curl creams and gels I layer on, it deals with lots of buildup. The dry air that comes with cooler weather doesn’t help, either. I’ve always given some serious TLC to my skincare, and lately I’ve been paying more attention to my scalp, too. Now it has a new winter routine, and it’s only two steps: Monpure’s Hydrate & Soothe Scalp Serum ($81) and Nourish & Stimulate Scalp Mask ($72).
Here’s how both fit into my weekly routine.
My Two-Step Scalp Routine
I reach for the serum once my hair is towel-dried, and honestly, it’s the easiest step I’ve added. A few drops along my part and a quick scalp massage are all it takes, and since it’s a leave-in, there’s nothing to rinse out. My biggest worry with anything leave-on is greasy roots, especially with the addition of curl products in my hair, but this one sinks in fast and feels weightless. Witch hazel extract, pro-vitamin B5 and allantoin keep things calm, while a little salicylic acid works on the buildup my styling products leave behind. I’d never really thought about exfoliating my scalp before, but this makes it feel like zero extra effort.
Then there’s the mask, which has quickly become my favorite way to slow down on wash day. Its fluffy, almost cloud-like texture spreads easily. I let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes while I take my time with the rest of my shower (an excuse to linger that I’ll happily take any day). Organic argan oil and camellia tea oil bring the nourishment, lactic acid helps clear away residue and aloe vera adds a cooling hit of hydration, all with the goal of creating a healthier environment for stronger hair. Any extra gets smoothed through my curls, so my ends get a little moisture boost, too.
Monpure works with trichologists to develop its products, and as CEO Carly Osborne puts it, the brand is “built on the belief that the scalp deserves to be taken seriously, as skin, as a living system.” There’s no shortage of great scalp treatments out there, but having two that tag-team (one for soothing after every wash and one for a deeper weekly treatment) makes it all feel easy to keep up with. Monpure also says the serum can help calm discomfort tied to eczema, breakouts and sun exposure. That said, if you’re dealing with a persistent or diagnosed scalp condition, check in with your dermatologist first.
The Bottom Line
My scalp has felt noticeably more comfortable since I started this routine, and the two products are easy enough to use that I’m actually able to stick with them. If your scalp could use a little extra attention, this pairing is a great place to start.
