A New App Lets You Get Botox at Home…But Should You?

Would you use this app for Botox?

There’s nothing better than whipping out your phone and pressing a button or two to book a hair or makeup appointment. And, there’s nothing better than the instant satisfaction of knowing that beauty appointment is scheduled to take place in your very own home.

While we are all for the trend of in-home beauty services—hello multitasking!—the latest app that’s fallen into the realm of uberization is one that delivers Botox on demand. Known as Boomer, the free app is said to be a “service that connects you with board-certified dermatologist that provides the care you need, whenever and wherever for nonsurgical procedures. Dermatologists will come to your home, office or hotel—a convenient alternative to crowded and busy doctors’ offices.” Seem a little too good to be true? We thought so, too.

See, the thing with noninvasive procedures like Botox, fillers, chemical peels and the like, is that they should always be performed in a medical setting. Duxbury, MA, plastic surgeon Christine Hamori, MD, says, “Medical procedures for aesthetic improvement like fillers and neurotoxins should always be done in a clean medical environment. Appropriate product preparation, sterility and universal precautions are more safely performed in a medical setting and not someone’s living room.” In theory, the idea of an app that sends a needle-wielding doctor to your door sounds great, especially for those who never have the time to get to the doctor’s office, but, in reality, how do you know if the doctor who shows up on your doorstep is board-certified and well-versed in the procedure you’ve requested. And, what if something goes wrong and the doctor doesn’t have all the necessary measures to work you out of a bad situation?

Serious procedures like these call for serious precautions and detail. For now, we think it’s best to leave the procedures that belong in the doctor’s office physically in the doctor’s office where you are safer and in good hands.
