From early days shampooing Ava Gabor and styling Bowie to creating the iconic “Meg,” Sally Hershberger isn’t just a hair icon, she’s the cool girl behind the world’s most unforgettable hair moments. Here, she revisits the legendary styles and stories that shaped pop culture, one snip at a time.
Michelle Pfeiffer
“I met Herb Ritts, the photographer, who at the time was like the most famous photographer...and before you know it, he threw me on an Interview cover with Michelle Pfeiffer, and I became her hairdresser for decades. We did Vogue, Interview, Vanity Fair. We had so many moments. She recently told me she saw an old haircut I gave her and said, ‘That was so good—I’d forgotten about it.’ That’s Michelle. Always elegant, always cool. We nailed every look.”

Meg Ryan
“People always think of Meg’s hair when they think of me. I still cut her hair and she still uses my Texturizing Balm. She puts it in wet and it dries all ropey and cool. That short, messy hair was never ‘mom.’ That’s the difference. It has to feel a little rock and roll, even when it’s short.”

Miley Cyrus
“Miley’s fearless. I gave her multiple cuts before we landed on the mullet during COVID. I had her mom cut it via video for Vogue. She’s a huge supporter of my line and even did a whole podcast on it. I used my Texturizing Balm to break up the hair, take out the poof and keep it flat but piecey.”

Joan Jett
“I met Joan when we were 16 and we’re still friends. That kind of effortless androgynous cool? It never goes out of style. That’s my lane. That’s the kind of hair I love: rebellious, not too done.”

David Bowie
“Bowie had me shoot the Tin Machine album cover. That meant everything to me. I was already doing photography and hair on set, so it made sense. We connected creatively. He just got it."

Jane Fonda
“When Jane was divorcing Ted Turner, she saw my short hair and said, ‘I want your cut.’ I went for a Julie Christie vibe. She skipped the red carpet for a while, and when she finally stepped out at the Oscars, there was an audible gasp. It was bold, but beautiful.”

Kris Jenner
“Kris always wants to look polished but not stiff. I think her style, like her persona, is sharp and smart. She trusts me, and that trust shows in the hair. It moves. It shines. It speaks.

Kendall Jenner
“Her bob was everywhere this year. I made it super sharp and blunt, but left cheekbone- framing pieces in the front so it wasn’t too severe. You could slick it down with a middle part or flip the back out with a flat iron. It’s modern, fresh and totally wearable.”
