We all know that a new year, new you is best achieved with a wicked hair transformation. And with 2024 underway, now is the perfect time to update your look with the latest in trending hair colors, from the most natural of vibes to the prettiest of pinks. From the colors in-demand on the red carpet to the ones smashing Instagram to pieces, we tapped the taste-maker stylists and celebrity hair colorists to learn what’s in store for 2024.

Kylie’s Pale in Pink Take Over

2014 is calling, and she loves the pink hair.

That’s right, with Instagram alight over Kylie’s brief flirt with pastel pink last week, the color has been revived from the mid-2010s depths. And honestly? It’s never looked better.

Colorist and hairstylist Bianca Hillier, who’s clients include Sofia Richie, explains that Kylie’s color is actually more than just a full neon-dip. “Pretty in pink is exactly what King Kylie is serving. It’s bold and cute!” Hillier says. “Although it is pink the key is to keep it a little dusty and less neon to make it that much more chic. As this classy pink fades it only gets cuter! To achieve this pink your hair must be platinum underneath. I would use Arctic Fox products to achieve the Pastel Bubblegum Pink look: including Frosé Pastel Pink Hair Dye ($12) and Electric Paradise (*UV Reactive ($12) for a more vibrant shade.”

Liz Vargas, Arctic Fox hair colorist and salon owner notes that her clientele are already asking for the rosy color, especially since Karol G jumped on-board the trend.

“One of my favorite artists is Karol G and so many more of my clients who are also fans of her started to request her color,” Vargas explains. “We just saw the return of King Kylie in a pink look too, and the best way to get that look is with Frosé. For lighter colors, you need to start on a level 10 and will need to bleach your hair first for best results. I fully expect pink to be the number-one hair color this year.”

All Natural Depth

For celebrity hairstylist and groomer Dave Stanwell, this year has been about a return to roots, pun intended.

“‘Natural vibes’ is what you’re hearing a lot of,” Stanwell explains. “Which I believe is bringing you and your hair styles and colors close to your natural tones or waves. For this, you need a great cut and color that has lower maintenance less upkeep which is also amazing on the hair.”

Achieving this is all about using more than one color at a time, meaning that trending hair colors in 2024 will probably be a blend of several shades to create something with a lot of depth.

Celebrity Colorist and Matrix brand ambassador, George Papanikolas explains that layering brings an element of sophistication to a look. “Blended and melted looks bring sophistication to the hair, emphasizing a more organic and lived-in aesthetic,” notes Papanikolas.

Getting close to your natural hair color and texture may also benefit you with fewer salon appointments, as long as you have the right products to keep your hair healthy.

“For maintaining and stretching time in between colors, I recommend John Frieda’s Violet Crush Shampoo and Conditioner ($9 each),” Stanwell says. “It’s important to use great products so you are not over processing your hair. For natural blondes, John Frieda’s Go Blonder Lightening Shampoo ($9) is a great option to enhance and brighten your natural color.”

Brondes Have More Fun

Alongside the more natural hair colors dominating this year, the fusion of blonde and copper is a sleek and sun-lit look that’s here to stay.

Papanikolas notes that bronde may win a popularity contest just for how flattering it is. “Bronde is probably the most popular of these trends as it has a universally flattering appeal, says Papanikolas. “It sits right in the middle of the hair color spectrum, and it can be adjusted warm or cool depending on the client’s skin tone.”

If you’re thinking J-Lo right now, that’s exactly what we’re talking about. Lived-in bronde is J-Lo’s hair color of choice, and it was given a fresh new look with her recent dramatic cut at Paris Fashion Week.

“If you plan to go shorter, it usually helps to leave a bit of a longer fringe to help soften angular lines,” says Papanikolas. For at-home maintenance, incorporating products that focus on hydration like Matrix Food for Soft Multi-Use Hair Oil Serum ($31) to help maintain the vibrancy of the color and softness in texture when highlighting hair.

Copper For Your Thoughts

With the rise of Cowgirl Copper, we shouldn’t exactly be surprised to see that these warm, brassy tones are likely to rule 2024, as well. But this year, Hillier predicts trending hair colors will be more vibrant and warm.

“Unlike cowgirl coppers’ natural and muted, almost orange-brown tones, this year trendy coppers are exactly what we are falling in love with,” Hillier says. “These range from not only a deep cherry cola red but more of a yellow-orange-based color with tons of shine. Strawberry blondes, apricot iridescent blondes with a hint of copper, cinnamon copper brunettes, etc.”

It’s important to know that if you’re planning on going towards red, you’ll need to take extra steps to ensure your color lasts.

“Coppers fade extremely quickly so using a fantasy gloss to easily tone the hair before any event is simple and all you need,” Hillier explains. “Keep your copper bright and you’ll be on trend 2024.”

According to Vargas, the fade is sometimes part of the appeal, especially for those who want to experiment with a vibrant or bright color. “As a hairstylist, a lot of my clients have been sending inspo images of reds and coppers they want for the year which can be achieved by using Arctic Fox’s Ritual Hair Dye ($12), Wrath Hair Dye ($12), and their new shade Ginger Flare Hair Dye ($12),” Vargas says. “These colors are great for anyone who wants to change their hair color often since semi-permanent hair dye is low commitment. Arctic Fox dyes fade with each wash so it’s easy for anyone who dyes their hair to change their color with minimal damage.”
