Long before “skinification” became a hair-care buzzword, there was Silk Therapy. In 1986, Dr. Farouk Shami, founder and chairman of Farouk Systems, the company that would later give us the cult-favorite CHI flat iron, introduced natural silk proteins to professional hair care with BioSilk Silk Therapy ($33). The serum he launched that year went on to become one of the most recognizable bottles in the business.
For Shami, it started as a personal mission. “Silk has always been a passion of mine,” he says. “I believed that if we could use the power of silk to help the hair feel softer, look healthier and have more shine, we could change the way people cared for their hair. If you want silky skin and hair, you need silk that cannot be duplicated.”

At the time, the idea was a departure. “We were taking an ingredient that had been valued for centuries and bringing it into modern hair care technology,” Shami explains. “That was the beginning of Silk Therapy, and it became something very special to me and to millions of people.” To him, silk was never just a functional ingredient. “It represents beauty, strength, softness and nature working together,” he says. “BioSilk became special because it connected an ancient beauty ingredient with modern science. We were taking the idea of silk and asking, ‘How can we use this to make the hair better?’”
Forty years later, that question has kept the brand in bathrooms and on salon shelves, and Shami believes the reason goes far beyond results. “I think people love BioSilk because they can feel the difference,” he says. “It is not only about how the hair looks. It is about how you feel when you touch your hair and when you see yourself in the mirror.”
There’s a sentimental pull, too. “BioSilk has been part of people’s lives for many years,” Shami says. “Some people discovered it when they were young, and now they are sharing it with their children. That means a lot to me. When you create something that becomes part of someone’s beauty ritual, you have created more than a product. You have created a memory.”

To mark the milestone, the brand is introducing BioSilk Silk Therapy Gold, a six-product collection that builds on the original serum by pairing Silk Therapy’s signature silk proteins with ingredients borrowed from skin care. Guided by the philosophy “Your scalp is skin,” the line covers a full routine, from shampoo and conditioner to treatments and finishing products, and it’s designed for all hair types. According to the brand, the formulas nourish the scalp while helping hair feel softer, smoother and more hydrated, with products that also help protect against dryness, frizz and heat damage.
Silk is still the star, and its amino acids help condition hair for a softer feel and added shine. The supporting ingredients have their own roles: The brand includes peptides to help improve elasticity and the look of fuller hair, hyaluronic acid to help retain moisture, and ceramides to support the hair’s protective barrier. Bakuchiol and aloe vera round out the collection’s focus on scalp care. The entire line is scented with Wild Tuberose, a blend of tuberose and creamy coconut.
“A lot has changed because technology has changed,” Shami says. “We have learned more about ingredients, about the hair and about what people expect from their products. I am excited about BioSilk Gold because we can take that original passion for silk and combine it with new technology and carefully selected ingredients.”
Still, he’s quick to point out that this isn’t a reinvention. “The heart of BioSilk has not changed,” he says. “We are still focused on beautiful, healthy-looking hair and the feeling that comes when your hair looks and feels its best. We are not walking away from the BioSilk people know and love. We are building on it.”
That balance between heritage and progress is how Shami envisions the brand’s next 40 years. “We can respect what made BioSilk iconic while continuing to innovate,” he says. “The name, the heritage and the love for silk remain. But we should never stop improving. For me, innovation does not mean forgetting where you came from. It means taking everything you have learned and using it to create something even better for the next generation.”
