I won’t lie—between the rise of trends like cowboy copper and candelit brunette, I thought for a minute that maybe the years of cool-girl blonde were behind us. With many celebrities opting for darker shades, it seemed like it was the summer of brown and reds, too. That was, however, until Joey King stepped out with a game-changing and trend-shifting shade: Playboy blonde.

Whether you recognize his name at first or not, Dimitris Giannetos is the celebrity hairstylist behind some of the most iconic A-listers in Hollywood, from Megan Fox to George Clooney and Gigi Hadid. Giannteos was also behind Joey King’s three major hair transformations this past month, the most recent of which being her Playboy blonde strands. Ahead, Giannetos explains what exactly “Playboy” blonde is, how to get it and who’s been rocking it all along.

What Is Playboy Blonde?

When I first saw Joey King’s Playboy blonde hair, I wasn’t exactly sure why the color was given the Hefner-inspired name, but from the platinum blonde shade to the dark root, I knew it fit. As Giannetos told us, “Playboy blonde is independent, strong and sexy.” What really differentiates Playboy blonde from traditional blondes is the laissez-faire vibe the shadow root gives off.
“Playboy blonde is the perfect combination of a well done blonde, while still giving off the vibe that you are the kind of a girl who doesn’t care to maintain that ‘perfect blonde,’ so there’s lots of regrowth. Basically it’s the rebellious blonde.”

How to Get and Maintain Playboy Blonde

One of the hardest things about going any sort of blonde is the upkeep, but as Giannetos mentioned, the regrowth is part of the Playboy blonde look, so you’ll have to worry less about root maintenance and more about keeping that icy shade bright. “For Playboy blondes, I always use L’Oreal Paris Le Color Gloss One Step In-Shower Toning Hair Gloss in Platinum Pearl ($16). Post color, I use GARNIER Fructis hair fillers, and then I always use Moroccanoil Purple Treatment ($38) to get rid any brassiness.”
