Cara Delevingne has had a busy couple of weeks. She performed her new song on The Tonight Show, appeared in Taylor Swift’s newest music video and walked the runway at L’Oréal’s Le Défilé, where she joined fellow brand ambassadors such as Andie MacDowell and Eva Longoria.
Somehow, we managed to sneak in a few moments with the model, actor and musician to chat about her upcoming album, go-to products and the power of inclusive beauty.
You have an upcoming album release. What made you want to expand your career into music more?
“It was just the right time. I knew it was going to happen at some point. I've been working towards it since I was a kid. I don't know. I was in the right headspace. It came from somewhere a lot deeper than me making a decision. It just felt like the direction of my compass changed.”
What does singing bring out in you that modeling or acting doesn’t?
“Well, it's literally using your voice. Whereas I think with acting, you're kind of trying to imagine and have to come from someone else's voice, and modeling is not really about your voice at all.”
Do you have a go-to ritual that makes you feel like yourself, even on your busiest days?
“Yeah, I do the same thing every day, which is I try to do a practice before I turn on my phone. It's usually different depending on where I hold tension in my body or what I need, if I need to calm myself down or wake myself up. It's always different. That helps me. That's what I do every day. That's what I consistently do, and it just helps me feel more like me.”
What does it mean to you to be part of a moment like Le Défilé built around inclusive beauty?
“I've loved doing the show every time. This is my third year. It's always really exciting to come back to Paris and do this show. It's like my favorite show to walk in because we're not having to mold ourselves into people to sell clothes. It has a feeling of just celebration and joy and celebrating everyone's individuality. Women supporting women is my favorite thing in the world, and that in itself makes everyone leave the show feeling better than when they came. There’s this feeling of, like, elation, I don't know. It's beautiful to see everyone shine.”
Do you have any go-to L’Oréal products?
“So many. It depends what we’re going for. Usually, because of my new hair, I need some help taming this bad boy, so I go with Elnett Extra Strong Hairspray ($16) because it’s great. I don’t like washing my hair too much because the color will fade. You can also put it on your eyebrows with a spoolie.
I’m a mascara queen, so I go for the Panorama Washable Mascara ($16). Then, if my skin’s not doing great—I get quite a lot of discoloration on my skin—I go for Infallible Foundation ($19). And Plump Ambition ($14) in Worth It.”
