Are You Allergic to Your Skin Care Products?
Does slathering your skin in creams leave you red and itchy? Do your anti-aging tactics cause you more harm than good? If issues like these, and others, are causing your skin to look less than perfect, there may be an ingredient in what you’re using that you are allergic or sensitive to.
“Allergic dermatitis is on the rise,” says New York dermatologist Adebola Dele-Michael, MD. “Many over-the-counter beauty and skin care products have known allergens in them that can irritate skin, such as fragrances and parabens.” But, allergens aren’t just limited to products purchased without a prescription. “Antiobiotics, like Neomycin, can cause skin problems, too.”
The problem occurs more in those who don’t realize what’s in their products and don’t know that they are sensitive or allergic to these ingredients. “A lot of people are unaware of the connection between skin irritations and rashes and preservatives in products and even topical antibiotics,” says Dr. Dele-Michael.
If you can’t get your skin to calm down, or if the problem persists, it's best to go see your dermatologist. “You can also try using fragrance-free products like Aveeno, Cetaphil or CeraVe lotions and cleansers, as well as hypoallergenic products. Also, make sure you’re using all-free detergents, too.”
