We're no strangers to some divine feminine energy, and this year it goes all the way to our crowns. The latest hair trends name goddess braids, a style that's been around for over 5,000 years, as a major player in 2025.

What are goddess braids?

Popular for its volume, this style originates in ancient cultures. In fact, the very first depiction of braids is nearly 30,000 years old. The Venus of Willendorf, located in modern-day Austria, depicts a female figure with a braided hairstyle. And in the Bronze and Iron Ages, braiding commonly appeared in art everywhere from North Africa to Europe and Western Asia. There's no single origin of hair braiding. However, artistic depictions have led anthropologists to estimate that goddess braids originated in 3,500 BCE. That makes the style around 5,000 years old.

According to celebrity hairstylist, natural hair educator and creator of Kim Kimble Hair Collection by HairUWear, Kim Kimble, these braids are regal by nature. "Goddess braids are large, bold braids that lay flat against the scalp, often with added hair extensions for volume," she says. "They can be styled in various patterns, from simple braids to intricate updos or crown styles, offering a regal and elegant look suitable for any occasion."

Also called boho braids, this look is a protective style, meaning it helps keep hair safe from the environment and reduces the need for daily styling.

"Goddess braids are thick, voluminous cornrows often styled in intricate patterns like straight back or zig-zag," Kimble explains. "The stylists parts hair into sections and then braids with precision to ensure smoothness and neatness. Accessories like beads or cuffs are sometimes added for extra flair."

Stylists often add extensions to create more volume, typically styled in curls.

"The process typically takes two to four hours," Kimble says. "That timeline depends on factors like hair type, braid complexity and whether hair extensions are used."

And with proper care, this style can last weeks.
