What Are Coffin Nails?

The name is pretty literal: “A coffin nail can be easily identified due to its square tip that is narrower than the base,” explains celebrity manicurist Chaun Legend. “It’s very similar to a style called the ballerina, only it differs on the outer edges as a ballerina nail is rounded with a squared-off tip, unlike the straight lines on all edges of a coffin nail.” The coffin shape is also distinct from square nails, which share sharp corners but aren’t tapered.

The coffin nail shape is best suited to those who desire length, adds celebrity nail artist and OPI ambassador Natalie Minerva. “I would say the coffin shape is best suited for medium to longer lengths,” she says. “It can be a little odd-looking to taper a shorter nail, making the coffin shape less impactful.”

Provided you’ve got the length for it, you can achieve the coffin nail shape at home. “File your nails into a square tip before starting to file the edges in on both sides of the nail at a slight angle to narrow the tip,” says Legend. “This softens the square to create an elongated, feminine nail.”

Are Coffin Nails Still in Style?

While any nail shape is in style if you love it (corny but true!), coffin nails are actually trending on red carpets and in salons alike. “A few years ago, coffin nails were more often associated with longer lengths, stronger tapering and brighter designs,” says nail educator Vikki Swan. “Now, I’m seeing a cleaner version with medium length, more controlled tapering, slimmer architecture and more minimal nail art."

Coffin vs. Almond Nails: What’s the Difference?

The main difference between coffin and almond nails is the free edge, Swan says. “Almond gradually tapers toward the center and finishes with a soft rounded or slightly pointed tip. Coffin also tapers in from the sides, but it ends with a straight free edge.”

As for who each shape suits best, it’s mostly a matter of nail-plate width. “Almond is especially flattering on wider nail plates because it visually narrows and elongates them,” Voloshyna says. “Coffin usually works best on naturally narrow or medium-width nail plates and gives the nails a more structured, geometric appearance.” Swan adds that almond also tends to be more versatile: “It works on a broader range of nail lengths and visually makes the fingers look softer and more elongated.”

Durability-wise, neither shape is inherently stronger—it comes down to technique. “Proper architecture matters much more than shape,” Swan says. With coffin specifically, that means not over-tapering: “If you taper coffin nails too aggressively and over-file the sides, you can weaken the nail significantly.” Voloshyna agrees, adding that almond has a practical edge here too, since it “does not have sharp corners that can catch.”

The Case for Medium Coffin Nails

If you’re on the fence about committing to coffin, both Swan and Voloshyna call medium length the sweet spot. “There’s enough length to show the signature taper and straight free edge, but the nail still doesn’t look too heavy,” Swan says. Her go-to designs at this length: French, ombré, cat-eye, chrome and minimal geometric nail art, since, as she puts it, “the shape already has a strong look on its own.”
