According to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), turquoise is a "semi-translucent to opaque gem that ranges from blue to green" that "imparts peace to those who wear it." Tanzanite's deep and saturated color, which ranges from a rich blue to violet, is often described as "velvety." Zircon actually has a broad shade range, but December's birthstone focuses on hues of greenish blues, purportedly a favorite gem in Victorian England.
