If you’re a nail-salon regular or an at-home manicure enthusiast, you’re probably familiar with OPI and its iconic, catchy nail polish names. Some popular ones include Funny Bunny (a sheer white hue), Bubble Bath (light pink), and Lincoln Park After Dark (a statement-making black-purple). Another best-selling shade that’s trending for summer is Cajun Shrimp, and brand cofounder Suzi Weiss-Fischmann recently shared the story behind it on TikTok.
“Cajun shrimp—one of the original shades from 1990—has a great story behind the name,” Weiss-Fischmann told viewers. “I was in New Orleans for a trade show and we went out to dinner and [the] first time I tasted the Cajun spice when I was served these amazing jumbo shrimps and I bit into the Cajun spice and it was the most amazing taste and we named the color for it.”
The video has since garnered over a million views and counting. It’s also captured the attention of fellow OPI lovers, who have flocked to the comments section to request more stories behind their favorite shades. “TELL ME ABOUT LINCOLN PARK AFTER DARK PLEASE,” one person begged. Another asked for the tale behind “I’m Not Really a Waitress,” described by the brand as a “vivacious chianti red nail polish.”
Weiss-Fischmann made the video in response to a content creator who deemed the brand’s Cajun Shrimp nail color—a hue OPI describes as “a spicy shade of coral nail polish”—one of the must-have nail colors for summer 2024.
In the original video that Weiss-Fischmann replied to, the creator used one coat of Cajun Shrimp followed by one coat of Glazed N’ Amused, a sheer pearl pink nail polish that can be layered over any color. In the comments section, beauty lovers rightfully gushed over the classic red nail color. “I’ve been wearing Cajun Shrimp for almost 20 years now,” one person wrote. Another highlighted how nostalgic the nail polish color is, noting that, “Cajun Shrimp has been my go-to since prom 2002!”
