Air-drying your hair to heat styled–perfection is possible, but you need the right products and techniques for your specific hair type to get the best result.

Here are the best tips on how to let your hair dry natural and look fabulous:

First, chose your products
If you have fine or thin hair, the goal with air-drying is to keep as much volume in it as possible. Because most styling products are designed to be used with heat, root amplifiers and volumizing products aren’t much help. If your hair is fine and straight and you want to add some texture, go with a sea salt spray. We like Bumble and bumble Surf Spray ($27). If your hair is fine and curly, something that will keep your curls intact and defined is best. Look for a product that beats humidity like Ouidad Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel ($26).

If you have thick hair, a mousse is best to keep it tame while it dries. Try John Frieda Frizz Ease Air-Dry Waves Styling Foam ($10). If your hair gets bigger as it dries, try a hair oil or control cream like Dr. Bronners Fair Trade Organic Hair Crème ($8).

Then, choose your style
For fine or thick straight hair, it’s best to lift your hair at the root as it dries. Try a loose top-knot bun. Make sure not to tie it too tightly against your head; you want to keep lift and volume. Also, use pins to keep it in place. A rubber band might cause dents and creases. If your hair is too short for one bun, multiple buns around your head will do the trick.

If your hair is curly, it’s best to let it dry loose. Make sure to not touch it too much. Once you have product in leave it alone. The more you touch it, the more frizz you’ll create.
