This May Be the Safest Way to Get Rid of Grays

By ·

Hate your grays? We feel the same way about ours, which is why we turn to hair dye as our rescuer to transform our strands back into ribbons of beautiful color. But not everyone can tolerate straight up traditional hair dye. Some are allergic to it, others have colored their hair to no avail and can’t risk breakage, and there are those who just don’t like the idea of putting a chemical on their scalp.

Quite possibly the biggest breakthrough in hair color this year is Hairprint, a hypoallergenic and toxin-free way to get rid of grays. Not a hair dye or hair color, the treatment harnesses the power of eight food-grade ingredients to restore brown and black hair to its natural color by making eumelanin, the pigment that gives hair its natural color. So basically, your hair will be back to its original, natural color.

Unlike hair dye, where you can pick your end color, Hairprint works with your natural color (so you can’t pick the shade you want to be) to cover up grays, which lasts, on average, three to eight weeks depending on how fast your hair grows. Keep in mind that the three-step process (there’s a pre-treatment to get rid of anything on the hair that can prevent Hairprint from working properly) is pretty messy and can take upward of 60 minutes or more to perform from start to finish. If your hair is already dark, it may darken a bit for a few days, too.

But for those who can’t tolerate regular hair color or don’t like using it, this alternative is by far the next best thing. And, as an added bonus, the pigments get locked in and don’t wash out, so your dark locks, which will also be strong and shiny and won’t turn red, orange or brassy. A formulation for lighter hair color is currently in the works.
