Shiny, lustrous hair. We all want it, but the chances we actually have it—not as unanimous. To get smooth, silky-looking hair, you either have to be born with it or spend an hour (or more) styling it yourself. Even then, your hair still might lack shine. Of course, you could spend a couple of days at the salon getting a blowout each week. But if you don’t have time for the latter, at least you can use these easy tips to get shiny strands—until your next appointment.

Clarify it: Pollution, hair products, and everyday wear and tear can make the shiniest of strands look lackluster. Luckily, you don’t even have to leave home to get rid of all that buildup. Just make a vinegar cleanse. Simply add 1/2 a cup of vinegar to one quart of water, shake it up in a bottle, then pour it over your hair after shampooing. Massage it into your roots, rinse and apply conditioner as usual. Your strands will be squeaky clean.

Hit it with a cool blast: After conditioning your hair in the shower, give it a cold water rinse. The drop in temperature will help smooth your hair and cause the cuticle to lie flat creating instant shine. The same rule applies to blow-drying. When you’re finished smoothing your strands, lock in that shine with a blast of cold air and you’re ready-to-go.

Spray on the shine: If all else fails, use hair oil. Look for one that nourishes your hair without weighing it down like Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray ($26). It’s main ingredient, Argan oil, contains antioxidants like Vitamin E to smooth hair and calm frizz. Just spray it to the ends of your strands and let it dry. It creates instant shine without any fuss.
