According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), “if age spots, wrinkly skin, or other signs of aging bother you, there are several ways—thanks to advances in dermatology—to diminish these signs of aging safely and with little or no downtime.” We recently chatted with Louisville, KY, dermatologist Tami Buss Cassis, MD, who shared all her go-to solutions for achieving more youthful-looking hands. (Bonus: She has a genius application tip for never forgetting to apply sunscreen or skin care there ever again):

Do you think there’s been an increased interest in aesthetic-related treatments regarding the hands in more recent years?

“I think it goes in waves, but as we focus on the face and chest, hands always follow. It simply gives away our age if we don’t pay attention to them.”

What are some concerns patients have regarding their hands (veins, spots, loss of volume)?

“Brown spots are number-one! Bruising, wrinkles and veins would be next.”

What are some of your favorite ways to treat aging hands?

“We love chemical peels and IPL for the hands to help with the brown spots and wrinkles. If volume loss is an issue, then Radiesse is an excellent option for a filler.”

Inside Tip: Do you have a rough patch on your hand or anywhere on your skin? If so, the AAD recommends you visit a dermatologist to find out if it’s actinic keratosis or AK—as some AKs can turn into skin cancer.

What is your best advice for slowing down the aging of hands?

“Sunscreen is a must, but I also try to remind my patients that, as you are applying your skin care to your face, use the back of your hands to put the products on—not the palms of your hands. Who cares what your palms look like!”
