Wrinkles and sun damage are sure signs of age, but according to recent research, your own bone structure could betray you.

A study published in the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, revealed that the aging process can prompt the lower jaw to grow and develop a square appearance. This squarer jaw line can make people appear older, research found.

The authors of the study analyzed images of 16 patients (at mean ages of 16 and 56). The lower jaw in both men and women appeared to grow with age, forming a larger and squarer jaw line.

It’s not an unsolvable issue. Soft-tissue procedures such as a full or limited-incision facelift can counteract size and squareness by creating the illusion of a smaller lower jaw and promote a youthful appearance.
