Last month, Biggest Loser personal trainer Bob Harper was working out in a New York City gym when he collapsed, suffering a heart attack that kept him unconscious for two days. Now that Harper is on the mend, he’s been documenting his recovery on social media, and that part of that involves adapting a more heart-friendly diet.

In a recent Instagram post, Harper noted: “Since my heart attack, my doctors have suggested more of a Mediterranean Diet so tonight’s dinner is branzino with Brussels sprouts and I started with a salad. #heartattacksurvivor.”

The Mediterranean diet is widely known as one of the best diets for heart health and brain health and has been shown to decrease the risk of multiple diseases including breast cancer. The diet is characterized by a high intake of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, whole grains, fish and olive oil, and helps to lower the daily amount of sodium and sugar. A 2013 study published by the New England Journal of Medicine showed that switching to a Mediterranean diet can prevent almost 1 in 3 heart attacks, strokes and deaths cause by heart disease.
