Kristen Bell is no stranger to sharing her beauty favorites, most recently showing love for Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Serum in a new campaign. But while spotlighting the cult-favorite nighttime formula, she also opened up about her sleep routine in an interview with Elle—and now we’re feeling inspired to rethink our own.
In the interview, published on Monday, March 24, the Nobody Wants This star dove into how she winds down at the end of the day. “I do best when my body is given a signal that I’m transitioning from work to home life, or after dinner to bed. I try to go in the sauna in the evenings. That’s really, really helpful. After dinner, I’ll have this hot chocolate from MoonBrew that has a little bit of magnesium, L-theanine, reishi, and chamomile. It’s the habit that reminds me I’m getting ready for bed. Now my girls have started drinking it as well, because they do anything that I do.”
After the soothing wellness drink comes a cool-down ritual inspired by European parenting culture. “I make us all a cup of hot cocoa after dinner, and then we usually do lüften,” Bell continues. “It’s this European thing where they think kids sleep best when they’re in the freezing cold. If you’ve ever seen those videos—they bundle babies up and put them on the porch to nap in their bassinet. I’ll usually open the windows in my room and in my girls’ room an hour or two before they go to bed.
Then when they come upstairs and we’re all brushing our teeth, I’ll tuck a hot water bottle underneath their blanket. When they go to bed, I’ll shut the windows. It’s a nice, frigidly cold room, and everybody sleeps better.”
Consider us officially inspired to give our own bedtime routine a refresh.
