With stars like Kim Kardashian flaunting killer curves reminiscent of the movie stars of the golden age of film, bodacious booties are back in a big way.
While butts come in many different sizes and shapes, and what’s considered attractive to one person may not be to another, one thing is for sure; it’s definitely an area garnering attention. “There are those who are culturally proud of the size and shape of their butt and other cultures that aren’t, and are seeking improvement,” says New York City plastic surgeon Andrew Kornstein, MD.

Actress Sofia Vergara’s butt is perfectly round, a shape hard to keep as we age. Why? The butt is comprised of skin, fat and tissue, so it ages similarly to how the face ages: fat naturally atrophies and the skin of the butt becomes loose. As this happens, the underlying structures begin to lose their support and the butt as a whole begins to fall downward.
Factors like weight gain and loss, failing to exercise, skin elasticity and genetics all contribute to changes in the butt.

So what does a perfect butt look like? “A young buttock looks almost like a rugby ball. There is a nice round shape, good projection and a fairly short crease that runs under the butt that doesn’t extend out too much,” says Coralville, IA, plastic surgeon Al Aly, MD. Basically, it looks like Jennifer Lopez’s butt, which she flaunts proudly. “Jennifer’s buttocks are what a lot of women want when they come in for an augmentation, both in terms of size and projection,” says Dr. Aly.

Superstar Beyoncé Knowles has a tight, toned rump, which she can attribute to many hours of heart-pumping dancing. To shrink a butt that is big, it’s all about cardio. “If your butt is too big, it’s usually due to body fat,” says celebrity trainer Ashley Borden. Cardiovascular exercises are best for targeting excess fat in the butt since they target it from different angles. “You want to keep your heart rate in the fat-burning zone. Try power walking on an incline, elliptical machines—with your posture upright and the weight in your heels—or rollerblading,” she adds. If you feel that your butt is too wide, plyometric movements should be done to activate fast twitch fibers in the legs, in turn sculpting the butt. “Some good exercises to try are crab walks with resistance bands, kettle ball exercises and frog hops.”

Also an avid exerciser, Jessica Biel has a small, perky behind. Borden says the key to a perky backside is to open up your quads (the thighs). “If an opposing muscle is tight, the other can’t ‘turn on.’ An active stretch, strength movements and stability exercises target the glutes,” says Borden. Start with pigeon stretches, followed by 10 squats on each leg, while keeping the glutes squeezed tight, and finish with instability pumps on each leg.

In addition to working out, a well-balanced diet is essential for maintaining a firm butt like Eva Longoria’s. Low-carb and high-protein diets may be all the rage but according to Los Angeles celebrity nutrionist and author of Skinny Chicks Don’t Eat Salad Christine Avanti, low-carb diets aren’t necessarily the way to go if you’re looking to target your rear end. “The butt is primarily made up of muscle. Low-carb diets cause the body to break down muscle tissue, which can lead to a flat butt,” she says. But that doesn’t mean you should go hog wild and load up on carbohydrates either. “You want to eat a balance of proteins, carbohydrates (wheat grains) and good fats like nuts and seeds,” she adds. “This way you’re saving muscle and getting rid of fat so you’re butt plumps up and gets round, preventing it from getting flabby and loose.”

When diet and exercise don’t cut it, and you want a sag-free butt like Maria Menounos’, butt lifts are a popular option. By lifting the tissue, and removing any extra skin, your plastic surgeon can reposition your butt back to a more youthful position. During the procedure, an incision is made starting at the back of one hip and extends around to the other. Even though a butt lift does not necessitate the use of fat or implants, it’s not uncommon for them to be used in conjunction to fully round out the look.

If it’s saddlebags you deal with, something show-stealing Pippa Middleton doesn’t worry seem to have to worry about, you’re not alone. Liposuction is the best way to slim a butt that’s accompanied by unwanted saddlebags, if you’re in good health and have fairly elastic skin. Another technique commonly used when liposuction is performed on the buttocks is ultrasound-assisted liposuction, which uses ultrasound waves to first break up and liquefy the fat before it’s suctioned out.

If you’re looking for less invasive options than a butt lift, or liposuction then there are other options to help you obtain a rear-end like Nicole Scherzinger. There are quite a few different technologies available that break up stubborn fat cells, but with all of them, multiple sessions are needed and the results are not permanent. Zerona is one of recent fat-melting devices to hit the market. A nonsurgical treatment that uses a low level or cold laser, as opposed to heat that’s traditionally used with laser treatments, Zerona helps the body to absorb fat by stimulating biological function.

In addition to shape, cellulite also plays a key role in how great a butt looks. Stacy Keibler seems to have nothing to worry about as of yet, but most women deal with cellulite in the rear. Cellulite is most commonly found on our backsides because large amounts of fat tend to get stored in the butt.
Luckily, there are nonsurgical options to deal with stubborn cellulite. Endermologie is a noninvasive procedure that can be used to diminish the appearance of cellulite. Endermologie employs motorized rollers, based on the concept of deep massage, to break up fat. SmoothShapes is another cellulite-fighting treatment, and one of the newer ones. It relies on Photomology, a combination of laser and light energy coupled with rollers and vacuum suction to target cellulite at the source.
