Color-adjusting makeup with formulas that adapt their shades have started cropping up on the market, with promises of creating personalized results. So how do they work? Although many companies apply their own terminology when it comes to marketing self-adjusting makeup, there are two main chemistry categories that the majority of the technologies fall under.

pH
Our skin generally has the same pH range-approximately between 4.5 and 6-but it can vary slightly at any given time. Typically, the most common reason behind fluctuating pH levels is the type of soap you use, but pH levels can also be affected by your diet, stress, how much water you drink, age and certain environmental factors. According to Ni’Kita Wilson, vice president of Cosmetech Laboratories, the day-to-day slight variances are enough to affect the response of the technology in this kind of color-changing makeup.

BODY TEMPERATURE
Many factors can affect your body temperature during any given day-medications, alcohol and the weather are just a few. “An increase in body temperature can increase or intensify the effect of products featuring this type of technology,” says Wilson. “This is one technology that will really create varied results from person to person-or even at different times when the product is being used.” However, this technology is on the expensive side, and the temperature of your environment can affect the color just as much as your own body temperature.
