Every summer, I go looking for the same thing: Something that makes my skin look like my skin, but better. Not foundation, not a full-coverage situation—just that holy grail, hard-to-find unicorn of a product where you glance in the mirror and think, ‘Oh, good.’ This June, I found it in Tarte’s new CC Color-Changing Tinted Serum ($42), and I’ve barely touched anything else since.

The concept sounds almost too good to be true: a serum-weight formula with encapsulated pigments that literally adapt to your skin tone as you blend. The brand calls it “adaptisphere technology,” and I’ll be honest, I was skeptical. Color-adapting products have a mixed track record, and I’ve found many CC-anythings to be a bit too heavy.

But this one genuinely works. You put a few small dots (I’ve been using Light, and less is definitely more, which I didn’t get right the first few applications) on your cheeks, blend and watch it shift from its base shade to something that just matches you. There are six shades, and the brand reports 100 percent of testers found their match.

What sold me on day one was how well it handles redness, without covering me in a makeup mask. I have a lot around my nose, cheeks and chin that most tinted moisturizers attempt to cover but never quite deal with. This one neutralizes it without making it look like I’ve applied anything. The five Amazonian colored clays doing the work underneath—rose to even, gold to brighten, light green to balance, red to nourish, white to soften—are actually earning their spot in the formula.

The finish is the other thing I keep coming back to. It gives a real glow, but not the kind that looks oily by noon. It’s more like the glow of someone who drank enough water, slept eight hours and isn’t stressed—lit from within, not shiny. A tip I’d pass along: While the brand recommends fingers to break the encapsulated pigments, I’ve found a flat-top complexion brush gives me the most even, seamless result, as does anything-everything hydrating underneath (my current mix is a light serum, light moisturizer, hydrating SPF, then this on top). A few quick strokes and it’s done in seconds.

Besides the proprietary clay concoction, the formula is also loaded with the kind of ingredients I want on my skin all summer: plumping peptides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, caffeine and the brand’s well-known maracuja oil for brightness. It wears for 16 hours, delivers 24-hour hydration and doesn’t budge—which, in June through August, is the only thing that matters.
