Molly Sims is no stranger to the various ways your body changes during pregnancy. The soon-to-be mom of three is pregnant with her third child and admits that her first pregnancy came with a surprising 85 pound weight gain. “No one tells you what’s going to happen,” Sims says during a video segment for People’s Mom Talk series. Speaking with a group of fellow celeb moms, including Soliel Moon Frye, Haylie Duff and Garcelle Beauvais, Sims talks about the scary undiagnosed condition that caused her unexpected extra weight. “With my first pregnancy, I ended up gaining 85 pounds and had a bad thyroid problem that no one diagnosed throughout the whole pregnancy until four months later,” said Sims.

According to the American Thyroid Association, an estimated 20 million Americans have some form of thyroid disease and up to 60 percent of those cases go undiagnosed. The thyroid gland releases hormones that control your metabolismo—how your body uses energy. It regulates vital body functions like breathing, heart rate, body weight, the nervous system, body temperature, cholesterol levels and more.
Sims went on to say that although those around her kept writing her weight gain off as part of her pregnancy, she knew something was amiss. “I was working out every day and I kept saying, “I’m really tired.”‘ The 43-year-old model turned actress mimiced the flippant responses she received to her concerns, “Oh sweetie, you’re just pregnant!” said Sims. “I’d say ‘I’m really tired, I’m not eating that much and I’m gaining so much weight.”
Mom to 4-year-old son Brooks and one-year-old daughter Scarlett, Sims announced her third pregnancy earlier this year. She now knows a thing or two about trusting your intuition. “It was really a lesson to learn to not stop asking if something was wrong. And I kept asking, asking. But I mean the changes…because sometimes deep down, when you’re eating that Sweet Lady Jane on the 405, somewhere deep down you think, ‘It’ll come off when I have the baby,’” joked Sims.
