From her chart-topping singles to her utterly adorable family content and her hilarious social media presence, Meghan Trainor has proved time and time again that she’s more than just a pop sensation. Over the past several years, Trainor has become a mainstay in viral cosmetics brand, e.l.f.’s, innovative, star-studded campaigns, adding several new titles to her resume, from a courtroom clerk alongside Judge Judy to her latest endeavor as Captain Meghan in the brand’s newest, aviation-inspired Cloud Skin campaign.

Today, e.l.f. and Meghan Trainor’s latest collaboration, the Cloud Skin Bundle ($36) hits stores, and of course there’s a laugh-out-loud, commercial starring Trainor as the humble e.l.f. airlines captain to go with it. To celebrate this sky-high launch, I sat down with Trainor to talk all things beauty, from the making Cloud Skin to her sleep-enhancing products and her signature scent.

First and foremost, what was it that brought you to e.l.f. and what makes their products ones you keep going back to?

“Oh man, I grew up with e.l.f.. I always, I remember seeing their products all over the stores and my mom loved e.l.f. too because it’s always been so affordable, cruelty-free and vegan. When I first got to work with them, I thought it was such an honor and just so cool—I couldn’t believe they knew my name! Now I’ve been working with them for three years and this our third campaign together, so the brand is really like my family now. They just let me be me and they give me the coolest most fun characters to play. I’ve been a weather woman, a courtroom reporter and now I’m playing a pilot and flight attendant at the same time in a pink plane. My son thinks I’m the coolest right now because he’s obsessed with planes.

We’re also celebrating my 10 year anniversary of my first debut album Title, and I re-recorded ‘All About That Bass’ and ‘Better When I’m Dancing,’ so we’re going to release a new version to celebrate, and I also created this incredible Cloud Skin bundle to celebrate. The e.l.f Cloud Skin Bundle was made to teach fans how to achieve the most dreamiest, dewiest, pillowy skin with a few very special products that I’m obsessed with: the brand new Halo Glow Powder Filter, Glow Reviver Lip Glimmer Oil in my favorite shade, Princess Cut, and of course the viral Halo Glow Liquid Filter. It also comes with this beautiful, soft, fuzzy wuzzy, limited-edition eye mask—all cruelty free, all vegan, of course—and the commercial is just iconic. It looks better than all my music videos [laughs].”

I suppose I should be calling you captain Meghan now! What was it like filming the e.l.f air campaign and how similar or different was it to your beauty-related flying experiences in real life?

“Oh it wasn’t like real life at all because it was so glamorous [laughs]. It was all pink everything and I was pretending how to know how to fly a plane—they caught me going, ‘Does anyone actually know how to fly this?’ and they added it to the commercial, it’s so funny. But really the whole thing was just glorious and glamorous and my son got to come on set and he thought I was the coolest ever. It was a dream come true. We were just giggling so hard trying to say the lines and I was admiring the products I was holding and taking pictures with them. It was the best day.”

Coming up on the 10th anniversary of Title, how would you say your perspective on beauty has changed from when you released the album to now?

“I never got professional makeup done until the ‘All About That Bass’ music video when I was 21 years old, and I didn’t even know makeup could go on your eyebrows at that time! I was like, ‘What are you doing?’ and they makeup artist was like ‘Uh we’re doing your brows.’ I was just pretending I knew what was happening at that time, but now I’m like a makeup nerd—I’m obsessed with it, I cannot get enough of it and I study it. I do my own makeup sometimes for shows and interviews because I feel like I really can do my own makeup now. I still can’t do my hair, though.

I really do study products. I love cruelty-free, I love vegan products, I love products that you know your skin won’t break out with, you know, and that’s why I’m such a big e.l.f. fan. They take care of their products and they make them affordable—they’re just the best.”

In the years since started performing and filming, have you have any beauty mishap moments that stick out to you and taught you something about yourself and your beauty needs?

“Me and my makeup artist, Alison Christian, we’ve been together for 10 years now, since the very beginning, and we look back at pictures and we go, ‘Dear Lord, why was I ever wearing a red lip.’ I was 19 years old then and the makeup we were doing made me look 40. And 40 is gorgeous, but at 19, you want to look 19. So we laugh now together when we look up old glam pictures. Every other makeup artist will try, they will literally go, ‘You should do red lip,’ and I go, ‘My lips aren’t big enough for that, but go ahead.’ And then they, they always wipe it off.”

This new collaboration features a cutesy pink sleep mask for maximizing your beauty sleep—as a busy mom-of-two and touring pop sensation. What are your other tips for resting well?

“I started doing mouth tape a while back and I do see a difference—I noticed a big difference. I feel like I sleep harder when I use it. Sometimes I get lazy and forget to put it on or I have a night wear I just where my lip oil or a lip mask—because you can’t really tape over that—I’ll sleep without it, but whenever I really need a good night’s sleep, I mouth tape.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only pack 3 beauty products, what would they be?

“In true honesty, they would be the products I put in the bundle—the Halo Glow Liquid Filter, Halo Glow Powder Filter and Lip Shimmer Oil. My Princess Cut lip oil I genuinely have at least eight or nine of them scattered around my house because I’m always putting it on. And the Halo Glow? I mean it went viral for a reason.”

If you could describe your beauty aesthetic today in three words what would you choose?

“Less is more. I’m really into taking it back a little. When Kylie [Jenner] didn’t do lash extensions or anything at the Oscars, I was gagged I loved it. I’m very into stripping it back.”

A personal fascination of mine that I ask every chance I get—do you have a signature scent?

” I really want to be better at fragrances, so I can’t say I have a specific scent, but anything I buy has to have vanilla in it. I’m not super bougie when it comes to scents—my wedding candle was scented like French toast and the whole wedding smelt like French toast. Some people hated it, but I loved it.”
