It feels like Lucy Hale is getting grounded in her second act—and we’re excited to see where it goes. If her first act was defined by her iconic role in Pretty Little Liars and shooting to stardom at a young age, her next seems to be more about settling into herself and starring in new projects that excite her, including her recently announced film, Dead Letters, from Alex Copper’s production company.

One thing has been consistent throughout her career—Hale has always had a unique, almost Snow White-like, look with striking light eyes, dark hair and porcelain skin. However, while chatting, Hale reveals she has skin woes just like the rest of us. She recently teamed up with Eucerin to share her love for the brand’s Radiant Tone Collection for addressing dark spots. We caught up with the 35-year-old about the products that help her combat hyperpigmentation, her recent projects, matcha preferences and dating apps.

Your skin always looks flawless. I have so many dark spots, so I’m wondering how you get such an even, glowy tone.

“I struggle with the same thing. I’m just at that age where I’m like, ‘Oh crap. I didn’t wear sunscreen in my 20s.’ I was so careless about it. I break out still, so I’ll have red marks from that and definitely have hyperpigmentation popping through. I mean, it’s popping up at a rapid rate. I started noticing them about a year ago, and I’m like, ‘Oh, this is what happens. This is what everyone says will happen when you get older.’

So my main concern with my skin is addressing texture, brightening and clarity. When I have treatments or choose products to use that is my focus, so partnering with Eucerin is like a dream come true because they’ve been around forever, and now they’re launching the Radiant Tone Collection, and it specifically targets dark spots and hyperpigmentation.

The products are amazing—they really are. They’re so lightweight. My skin is really sensitive—like you look at me the wrong way, and I’ll break out. But this line is so clean and science-backed, and I feel good just knowing that what I’m putting on my skin is the best for my skin type. So it’s that, and also just really wearing SPF all the time as well.

I’ve done one of those scans, it was in London, where they do a scan of your skin, and they show the layers of your skin. Oh my gosh. It shows you the sun damage that basically just gets brought to the surface as you get older. It’s part of life, it’s part of aging, but there are things we can do that can help clear those spots up. And I swear by the Eucerin Radiant tone products.”

Are there any products you’ve used your whole career that you’ve been consistently loyal to?

“I don’t know if there are specific products, but there are things I do all the time that I’ve been doing for a long time. I put eye patches in the fridge, and I put them on in the morning. Do they work? I don’t really know, but it feels nice. It’s part of my little morning routine that I do. I’ve been icing my skin a lot recently, which is something I used to do as a teenager when I would get cystic acne. I feel like icing your skin in general is just really nice. I love a good face massage and things like that. There is an eyelash serum that I’ve been using for 10 years. It’s by Rodan + Fields ($169), and you just put it on like eyeliner. It’s great. That’s definitely a staple.”

You’re talking about icing your face, and all I’m thinking about is Ashton Hall’s morning routine with the iced Saratoga water.

“I know. I kind of am that way, but maybe not that extra. I usually just get an ice cube, run it underwater, and just kind of rub it around.”

Your new movie, F*** Marry Kill, deals with dating apps and murder mysteries, so I have a two-pronged question: are you into dating apps, and are you into true crime?

“Yes to both. I have, in the past, been on a dating app. I’m very open about all of that, and yes, I’m very into true crime. I feel like I’ve always been that way. I feel like every woman I know loves true crime, and I think that’s because we are just more sensitive and emotional, and we’re more drawn to the psychology and why behind it. I also feel like women are problem solvers. I’m not saying men aren’t into true crime as well, but we like to figure s**t out and get it done. I feel like, when I watch anything true crime related I’m convinced I could figure out who it was.

In this movie, we have a young woman who’s just gotten out of a relationship, and she’s back on the dating scene, but it happens to coincide with a serial killer in her town, and she feels like she can prove that she’s not dating the killer. It’s more to prove her friends wrong, but it’s very funny. It blends the thriller and romcom genres together.”

That’s fun. I feel like you don’t see thriller romcoms all that often.

“Well, you don’t really hear of true crime being taken lightly, and it’s not that we’re not taking it seriously, but it’s just a fun twist on a story that you’ve heard so many times.”

It sounds like the New York dating scene. I’m sure people are swiping with killers without knowing.

“Oh, probably isn’t that scary to think about that? Who knows. It could be just someone you pass on the street.”

Hard pivot, I saw you’re a matcha girlie now. Any favorites? Do you make them at home?

“Yeah, I had two today! So here’s the thing about me—I love the idea of me making it at home. I bought all the stuff, but I feel like I’m always needing to leave to go somewhere, so I end up buying it out a lot. I don’t know if you guys have Alfred in New York, but they have really good matcha. There’s a place called Dialog in LA that has good matcha. Verve has good matcha. It is my goal to make a perfect matcha latte at home. I have all the stuff, so maybe next time we speak, I will have mastered this. I haven’t yet.”

It sounds good, but then the professional’s tastes better, and you didn’t have to do anything, so I get it.

“It tastes better when you’re spending money on it, I’ll tell you that. Every time I drink my homemade matcha, I’m like, ‘This tastes like crap.’

What are some spring beauty trends you’re loving or hating?

“I’m so bad about knowing what’s happening in the world, trend-wise. I’m like, ‘What’s trending?’ I do love the butter yellow moment in clothes, but I feel like I don’t know much of what’s going on.”

You’re just doing your own thing—that’s even better.

“Yeah, I kind of feel like I do that a lot of the time, but on a broader scale, I always like to try things. I like to experiment with hair and makeup. The only thing I feel like I might not ever do is bleach my eyebrows, but it’s only because my eyebrows are so bold. I don’t know if I could pull it off, but never say never.”
