You’ve heard of snakes on a plane, but how about lasers on a plane? In a recent snap while traveling to Dubai with her dermatologist, Kim Kardashian West displays a pair of oversized goggles and remarks how perfect they are for a skin resurfacing treatment—on a plane. “See I got my laser googles,” snapped the reality star. “You need laser goggles when you do like a laser treatment. So these are perfect for plane lasers.”

So, what’s a plane laser and can you really get a skin resurfacing treatment while traveling 40,000 feet in the air? To answer this pressing question we reached out to Washington, DC, dermatologist Tina Alster, MD.
“There are some small lasers, such as the Fraxel Clear + Brilliant, that are portable, so it is possible,” says Dr. Alster. As far as the safety concerns associated with performing a laser treatment on an aircraft, Dr. Alster said it all comes down to the flight itself. “It depends on the plane and the weather conditions—a large plane without turbulence would be safe enough to operate a laser, but I would prefer to be on solid ground if I had the choice.”
And what about those oversized “laser goggles” that Kardashian West is sporting in the snap? According to Dr. Alster, these aren’t your typical laser goggles. “They look pretty, but it’s highly doubtful that they would provide the necessary eye protection for most lasers in use today,” she adds. “Besides, they are covering half of her face, so where is she getting the laser treatment?”
