When we got word via an embargo email over the summer that Highbrow Hippie was launching a hair care and wellness line come fall, the NewBeauty Slack channels went into full-on communication. Located in Venice, CA and overlooking Abbot Kinney Boulevard, the Highbrow Hippie Atelier is much more than a place to get hair color and cuts—it’s a trusted gathering spot that counts Julia Roberts, Meghan Markle, Kristin Davis, Gwyneth Paltrow, Diane Von Furstenberg and Amber Valletta, amongst others, as loyal friends and followers.

Led by the beloved Kadi Lee and Myka Harris, the Highbrow Hippie debut products landed on my doorstep in prototype packaging. “We always knew that we wanted to launch a product line. So when it came time to do so we looked towards our clients on where to start,” Harris says of the two-SKU debut. “The conversations that were being had made it clear that it needed to be about hair health. They still felt as though nothing in the market was speaking directly to them. We realized that we could provide them with a comprehensive system that treats the root causes of hair loss and damage while holistically supporting overall wellness and longevity as women.”

The duo consists of Root Replenish Active Growth Serum ($88) and a hair-health supplement called Essential Wellbeing Complex ($118 per 120 capsules). I, admittedly, am not the most consistent with taking supplements. But when I got word that Julia Roberts was using them on the regular, I got a bit more rigid. On the financial front, Markle told InStyle she’s not only a fan, but also an investor. “Kadi has a mastery of hair health, and her Highbrow Hippie collection is a perfect reflection of that. I am so proud to invest in her as a friend and as a female founder.”

“We have seen some great results with our clients that have been using both the serum and the supplement,” Harris assured me. “People have reported increased hair growth, better sleep, less bloating, stronger nails and an increased sense of calm. We have a few clients in particular that were looking to address bald patches and they are seeing significant improvement.”

As for me, after a few weeks, the serum is a new star in my rotation. And the supplement is easy enough to take that I’m still going strong.

Using microbiome-balancing and nourishing technologies, fermented antioxidant-rich resveratrol and DHT blockers, the root-specific product supports a healthier scalp. The lightweight formula absorbs instantly (you apply a thin layer to the scalp, massage in and style as usual) and it really does its job to make hair feel and look denser. Plus, it never gets greasy, so your hair somehow looks better as the days of your last blowout move along.

“The hardest part of getting to the final product was getting all of the pieces together to create the end result,” says Harris of the launch, which has whispers of a hair mask and herbal tea coming soon. “Launching a product is no easy feat. It took a lot of coordination to manage manufacturers and the supply chain. It was an entirely new world for us and we learned a lot throughout the entire process. The amount of thought that had to go into getting it to all come together at the same time was tremendous!”
