If you’ve got a round face and have been wondering what cut or style would actually be the most flattering for you, you’re in luck. As it turns out, this specific face shape lends itself to be one of the most versatile when it comes to haircuts. “There are several different haircut options that can transform and enhance round faces,” says Andrew Fitzsimons, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Andrew Fitzsimons Haircare.
Blunt cuts, lobs, bobs, pixies, curtain bangs and more, Fitzsimons points to many of our favorite haircuts that can define round faces in many ways. Jennifer Nast, senior stylist at Sharon Dorram at Sally Hershberger Salon, agrees and says there are a couple of things to consider when choosing what cut and length you want to go for to complement your round face. “Portion matters,” says Nast. “Make sure portions are not too close or too far apart. Neck length is also important. If you have a long neck, consider keeping hair on the longer side. If you have a short neck, try cutting your hair to collarbone length.”
To determine whether you have a round face or not, Fitzsimons says to look in the mirror and find the widest part of your face. He explains that people with round faces often find that their cheeks are the widest parts of their face. Then you’ll want to look at the length and width of your face, which, he says, should be similar or nearly equal in measurements. Finally, he says that a rounded hairline is a common attribute of round faces, so something to consider when trying to determine your face shape.
With all that in mind, below are the 30 best haircuts for round faces. Be sure to add this to your hair mood board the next time you visit your stylist.
The best haircuts for round faces
1/30
Lupita Nyong’o
Fitzsimons says that if you’re feeling especially bold, opt for a pixie. “Pixie cuts are a great low maintenance option that naturally elongates the face,” he says. “[They are also] great for round faces, offering a stark contrast.” Case in point: Lupita Nyong’o, who wears her natural textured hair in a deep parted super pixie that we love.
2/30
Kristen Dunst
Fitzsimons loves a bob with a deep side part, which he says will be very flattering. “The angles in this cut will help shape your face,” he says. Kristen Dunst’s wavy bob with a deep side part does just that and looks so pretty.
3/30
Emma Stone
Fitzsimons says that if you want to maintain your long length, long layers are key to maintaining dimension. He likes to add a few waves to create some texture. We love Emma Stone’s effortless loose waves to add volume to her medium-length hair.
4/30
Gabrielle Union
Fitzsimons says that if you’re not a big fan of layers or something very, very short, try a lob. “Lobs are incredibly versatile and can be worked with natural texture, sleek and straight or curled,” he says. He recommends doing a deep-parted lob, like Gabrielle Union’s blunt cut and deep side part, for a dynamic look.
5/30
Zendaya
“Round faces lend themselves to both long and short hair,” says Fitzsimons. “The key is playing around with textures and layers to find the right style that will help to blend and add more angles to the face.” We love Zendaya wearing her long, natural textured hair out, cascading down her back, looking so regal and chic.
6/30
Gemma Chan
We love the casual beach waves Gemma Chan wears with her medium-length cut. It gives her long layers added volume and frames her round face effortlessly.
7/30
Penelope Cruz
We love throwing two classic styles together. Fitzsimons says bangs make for the perfect complement to long layers, as seen here on Penelope Cruz. “Bangs in any form help accentuate the facial feature you’d like to focus on,” he says. Opt for curtain bangs or French fringe.
8/30
Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis wears her long, thick hair with voluminous waves for major body. It accentuates her layers and her facial features, just as Fitzsimons says it would.
9/30
Jennifer Lawrence
Sleek with slight bends to her long hair for some added movement, Jennifer Lawrence went for simple elegance for this year’s Golden Globes. Lawrence opted for a deep side part and hair swept to one side for a more dynamic look.
10/30
Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore keeps her loose curls towards the ends of her long hair, and it totally works. It’s an easy way to add volume to your hair and definition to a round face.
11/30
Kate Bosworth
Though subtle, these loose waves on Kate Bosworth still make a statement and add volume to her fine hair. Fitzsimons recommends using something like the AF1 Restructuring 10-in-1 Leave-in Conditioner ($16) into damp hair before you blow dry and style to keep strands nourished.
12/30
Cameron Diaz
According to Fitzsimons, pixie cuts with longer edges and texture help to enhance the cheekbones while also elongating the face. Cameron Diaz’s grown out pixie cut, for example, is not only turning into a cool layered bob but also highlighting her best facial features.
13/30
Isla Fisher
Loose waves make for the ultimate—and easy—glam look. Isla Fisher’s waves add volume and movement to her long layers with little to no effort.
14/30
Chrissy Teigen
Fitzsimons says that a blunt haircut lengthens features and defines the jawline. Here, Chrissy Teigen wears a blunt bob with a middle part.
15/30
Taraji P. Henson
Taraji P. Henson’s bold neon pink color has already won us over. But we also love the wavy texture that adds volume to her lob and helps define her natural features.
16/30
Sarah Hyland
Sarah Hyland’s fringe bangs and loose waves combo is a fun way to spice up a grown out lob. Fitzsimons recommends using something like the NatureLab. Tokyo’s Perfect Oil Shine Spray($19) to keep ends healthy and define that texture.
17/30
Kelly Clarkson
“Long, face framing bangs are a great way to frame the face and take attention away from the middle of the face by adding movement and interest,” says Fitzsimons. Kelly Clarkson wears her long layers in loose waves cascading down past her shoulders for added volume.
18/30
Miranda Kerr
Fekkai stylist Stephane Andre likes adding some texture to medium length hair to give round faces more dimension. Miranda Kerr’s loose waves and a deep side part do just that while giving us glam vibes.
19/30
Jennifer Hudson
Nast loves a bob with round layers, and a perfect example of that is Jennifer Hudson’s look at the 50th Daytime Emmy Awards. Here, she wears hers with added volume and a middle part.
20/30
Nina Dobrev
Andre loves wispy bangs for round faces. Nina Dobrev’s wispy bangs are a bit more on the fuller side but still frame and give her round face dimension.
21/30
Ginnifer Goodwin
All the experts agree that the pixie haircut reigns supreme for a round face. Ginnifer Goodwin wears hers swept to one side to give her look that rocker edge.
22/30
Christina Ricci
Nast loves hair that is cut right at the collarbone. She likes pairing this look with a deep side part, but Christina Ricci is rocking this cut with a deep middle part, and we’re not mad at it.
23/30
Adriana Lima
Sleek and trés chic, Adrianna Lima wears her medium-length hair super straight with a deep side part. For added shine (and nourishment), reach for a hair oil to slick hair back for a modern edge.
24/30
Hayden Panettiere
Simple yet defining, Hayden Panettiere’s subtle long layers help bring depth and dimension to her overall look. And as personal fans of the side part, we love that she opted to sweep her hair and part it on the right.
25/30
Michelle Williams
Nast likes a pixie cut for a round face, especially one with bangs that you can push to the side to elevate your overall look. There’s no better example of this than Michelle Willaims and her iconic bleached blonde pixie.
26/30
Amy Adams
You can never go wrong with loose, beachy waves, especially if you have a round face. Amy Adams wears hers with a middle part to get that easy, breezy effortless vibe on the red carpet.
27/30
Dakota Johnson
If you’re looking for a cut to slim or create definition inyour face, Fitzsimons says to get bangs. He likes a side swept bang or curtain bangs to create a shape around the face. Though Dakota Jonson’s bangs are a bit more full, the bangs balance out her round face quite nicely.
28/30
Viola Davis
Andre also suggests a slightly blunt bob with some texture. Viola Davis wears her natural curls in a short bob that hits just at her chin with a middle part for a super pretty look.
29/30
Adele
Andre loves an Old Hollywood glam moment and suggests going for classic waves or long layers to add volume. Adele’s luscious curls bring on all the nostalgia feels and is just oh so chic.
30/30
Carey Mulligan
“Many people think they should stay away from bob cuts if they have a round face, but blended bobs with chin length layers and a middle part will give the illusion of length and movement,” says Fitzsimons. “[This makes] them a great option for rounder face shapes.” Carey Mulligan’s sleek bob with curved ends is simple yet elegant; it’s definitely a classic.
