Rolling needles across your lips doesn’t exactly sound pleasant, let alone beneficial in any way. However, beauty blogger Farah Dhukai recently took to Instagram to promote what she claims to be an easy, at-home alternative for lip fillers: dermarolling.
“I’ve thought about getting fillers, but decided to try THIS alternate method instead and I LOVE IT!” says Dhukai in the post before explaining the exact method she uses when dermarolling.
Dermarolling, aka microneedling, works by using a dermaroller full of multiple, small needles to prick the skin and create tiny wounds in the epidermis. These tiny punctures force the skin to repair itself and create new skin cells for a brighter, tighter look. While this method has proven to be highly effective for boosting collagen production, eliminating acne scars and improving the skin’s overall texture when used on facial skin, it’s been mostly considered an in-office procedure that patients shouldn’t try at home.

Marianne Pistilli, PA-C of Schweiger Dermatology in NYC, agrees with this notion: “I think it is too risky and should only be done by a medical professional or a trained operator,” she explains. “It is too risky to make yourself bleed because there is a huge risk of infection, and even more scary, it can bring on cold sores.”
The takeaway? While lip needling will reap the same collagen-boosting, skin-plumping benefits for your lips as it would your face, it’s better to leave this one to the professionals.
