Choosing the right filler for each area of your face is both a science and an art. While the brand matters, understanding the characteristics—such as elasticity, density and longevity—of filler types is crucial for achieving optimal results. We spoke with expert injectors to uncover the best filler options for specific facial areas, from the under-eyes to the cheeks, lips and even the hands.
The Basics
East Greenwich, RI dermatologist Caroline Chang, MD notes the importance of choosing fillers based on specific properties. “Restylane and Juvéderm are different brands, but each has a range of fillers with unique qualities,” she explains. “The best type of filler for under-eyes or lips would be one with a lower G’ prime, which is more flexible. In contrast, fillers with a higher G’ prime, which are stiffer, are ideal for creating structure in areas like the cheeks or jawline.”
Laguna Hills, CA dermatologist Jennifer Channual, MD, agrees, adding, “Lower-density fillers don’t last as long—about a year depending on the brand. However, biostimulatory fillers like Sculptra can provide volume correction and stimulate collagen for up to two years.”
How long do fillers last?
Shreveport, LA dermatologist Skylar Souyoul, MD highlights the role of movement in filler longevity. “Areas with more movement, like the lips, metabolize filler quicker—usually lasting about 12 months. In contrast, areas like the tear troughs and temples, where there’s less movement, can retain fillers for over two years,” she explains. Dr. Souyoul notes that repeated treatments can improve longevity. “I’ve had long-term lip filler patients whose results have lasted two years because of consistent touch-ups.”
Filler for Under-Eyes
Injecting filler into the under-eye area requires precision and the right product. Vienna, VA dermatologist Brenda Dintiman, MD shares her go-to options: “I love Restylane Eyelight and RHA Redensity for tear troughs. These fillers minimize swelling while creating a natural look.” She highlights each filler’s ability to address under-eye hollows without puffiness or heaviness.
Cheek Filler
When it comes to lifting and contouring the cheeks, Juvéderm Voluma and Revance RHA4 stand out. Rochester, MI dermatologist Mariana D. Atanasovski, MD praises Voluma for its results: “It has great lifting power while still appearing natural and smooth. It’s what I use personally to maintain volume loss with time.” Dr. Dintiman echoes this, noting that RHA4 offers similar lifting capabilities with minimal swelling for a natural finish.
Lip Plumpers
The lips demand fillers that match the desired aesthetic. “Revance’s RHA2 is fantastic for creating natural lips,” says Dr. Channual. “But for a plumpy pout, I love Restylane Kysse. It provides a hydrated, youthful appearance.” Louisville, KY, dermatologist Tami Buss Cassis, MD agrees, adding, “Kysse is my favorite for lips—it’s perfect for creating volume without looking overdone.”
Lower Face and Jawline
To tackle sagging and volume loss in the lower face, Dr. Atanasovski recommends Juvéderm Ultra. “It’s softer and more supple, making it an excellent choice for areas prone to sagging, such as the lower face and jowls. It delivers natural-looking results without being overly dense.”
For a more structured approach, Juvéderm Volux made history just two years ago as the first hyaluronic acid filler to be FDA-approved specifically for jawline contouring, which offers targeted definition and lift.
Temples
Biostimulatory fillers like Sculptra are highly effective for the temples. “Sculptra works beautifully for the temples, stimulating collagen and restoring volume over time,” says Dr. Cassis. Juvéderm Voluma, the first-and-only hyaluronic acid filler FDA-approved for the temples, is another option for restoring volume and structure in this area.
Hands
For hand rejuvenation, Radiesse stands out, says Dr. Cassis. “Radiesse is my favorite—it smooths and revitalizes the hands, which are often overlooked.” Restylane Lyft is also approved for restoring volume and minimizing the appearance of veins and tendons in aging hands.
