Thanks to the internet, we have a chance to see all the different techniques stylists use to get rid of split ends, clean scalps or add layers.

The most recent of such is Sarai Speer, a Kansas City hairstylist at Rehab Salon and Spa. A video showing her unconventional haircutting technique that she calls the “Whoville Christmas Tree” has gone viral.

She starts her process by twisting a small section of hair and holding it straight up. Then she goes in with shears and starts slicing in a downward motion. “You go down the hair and keep the tension and that’s what creates those pieces,” she told Today. “You keep the sheers half open. Do not close them.” In the videos, it almost looks like she’s just rubbing the ends of the hair.

In her first Instagram post that caught people’s attention, she writes that this technique “reduces bulk, creates interior layering and movement.” She also writes that she recognizes that it looks “scary AF but the results are rad.”

Speer first learned this technique in class around five years ago and has been perfecting it ever since. After years of practice, she can use it to cut short, long and any hair length in between.

After her video started traction, lots of followers commented that she’s ruining the hair. However, she assures everyone that she isn’t “butchering the hair. I’m keeping the integrity of the hair. It’s not a technique for everyone.”

As terrifying as the cutting videos are to watch, her “after” shots prove the results are stunning.
