Sun-protective clothing has long been a “derm do,” but a new drop from Splendid is making the case that UPF-rated fabric can now belong in everyday wardrobes, too.
Releasing this week, the brand’s SunSoft Collection brings UPF 50+ protection to the kind of easy, breathable pieces you’d actually want to wear all day.
The move makes sense. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that clothing is one of the most effective forms of sun protection available, yet most people still rely on sunscreen alone. Dallas dermatologist Elizabeth Houshmand, MD, wants to change that.

“I recommend UPF, or Ultraviolet Protection Factor, clothing because you have consistent protection, which helps reduce skin cancer and premature aging,” she says. “Unlike sunscreen, it never needs reapplication, won't wash off and provides reliable coverage.”
The collection spans long and short-sleeve tees, midi skirts and wide-leg pants—all cut in Splendid’s signature relaxed silhouettes and available in the vacation-ready hues of scarlet, perfect blue, wicker and black.
“Our latest fabrication features UPF 50+ protection for catching rays, not soaking them in,” says Splendid’s creative director Holly Shapiro. “Every piece has a lightweight, barely-there feel that takes you from morning light to golden hour.”
What sets SunSoft apart is the fabric itself: It is purpose-built to be breathable and lightweight, without sacrificing coverage. Think less thick activewear engineered for a hike, more the kind of piece you’d layer over a swimsuit for a walk to lunch, then wear straight through dinner. Prices range from $78 to $128.
