Is pink hair right for you?

If you're thinking about taking the plunge into one of this season's hottest hair colors, you might be asking: How do I know this shade is right for me?

Pastel pink is a cool-toned shade, so most stylists agree that it flatters cooler skin tones. “Typically, clients with lighter, cooler skin tones look better in neutral to cooler tones, so I recommend staying more in tone,” says celebrity stylist and colorist Jonathan Colombini, who is also L’Oréal Paris’ creative director of style and color. “That being said, warmer to olive skin tones can really get away with a variety of tones.”

You can also work with your colorist to adjust the depth of your pink hair to flatter your skin better. Undertones of red and magenta can help warm up the overall look, while icy blonde can help create a cooler vibe.

Trying Pink Hair Without Bleaching

If you're not ready to commit to a permanent color or are wary of bleaching, there is some good news. These days, there are plenty of carefully formulated color-depositing masks for a strong temporary color. And summer turns out to be the perfect time to try them.

“Temporary hair color seems always to have a moment in the summer months,” says celeb hairstylist and Moroccanoil Color Ambassador Amanda Lee. “It’s good for someone who wants a change but doesn’t want to commit. Usually, blondes are the ones loving temporary hair color as it makes the biggest impact on lightened hair.”

If your strands are a darker hue, you may have a tougher time seeing a lot of color payoff. But there are still ways you can safely lighten your hair at home before going for temporary or permanent pink hair. “For a soft DIY lightening, you can lighten your hair subtly the old-fashioned way with lemon juice,” says celebrity colorist Barbara Farnworth. While the effects aren't dramatic, you can get a subtle lightening effect that won't sacrifice the overall integrity of your hair. Just make sure you do a strand test first!
