Hand soap is having a luxury moment, and beloved body-care brand Nécessaire is making sure it does more than look good by the sink. Enter the brand’s new The Hand Wash ($40) and The Hand Lotion ($50), which make a case for treating hand care with the same attention as the rest of your routine.
The move brings Nécessaire into the surprisingly crowded status-soap space, alongside longtime favorites like Aesop Resurrection Hand Wash ($47) and Le Labo Hinoki Hand Soap ($54), both known for turning everyday essentials into chic, giftable fixtures of the modern bathroom.
Nécessaire’s take feels distinctly its own: architectural packaging, the brand’s warm Santal scent of pure sandalwood oil, black pepper, iris and suede, and ingredients chosen with skin health in mind. Both The Hand Wash and The Hand Lotion use niacinamide, panthenol and glycerin, a trio that helps replenish hydration, soften roughness and defend against the moisture loss that can come with frequent washing.
While The Hand Wash is new territory for Nécessaire, hand care itself isn’t. In late 2023, the brand introduced The Hand Cream ($28)—which has earned the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance—and The Hand Retinol ($38) as a two-step system: a barrier-supporting cream for day and a nighttime retinol treatment for hands. The latter pairs 0.25-percent encapsulated retinol with 5-percent alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) and peptides to help smooth roughness, soften the look of crepiness and even tone over time, while The Hand Cream uses ceramides, peptides, niacinamide and marula butter to help replenish dry, exposed skin.
In the years since, the duo has become part of Nécessaire’s bestsellers lineup, joining brand favorites like The Body Wash ($42) and The Rosemary Hair Duo ($62). If The Hand Wash and The Hand Lotion follow the same path, they may not be far behind—and you can shop both now à la carte on Nécessaire’s website and Sephora.com.
