They may technically be a defect between the muscle and skin, but cheek dimples have endeared themselves to many cultures. With lovely celebrities like Jennifer Garner, Gabrielle Union and Leighton Meester making dimples seem darling, plastic surgeons have found themselves on the receiving end of requests for these adorable indentations.
Although many patients seek a second dimple to match the one they were born with on one cheek, it seems many patients who didn’t inherit this generally genetic feature are requesting them, too. Although there currently aren’t any statistics for what is being called dimple fabrication or dimple creation surgery, MSNBC found a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who claims to have placed a couple hundred dimples in the last two years. Others, however, say it’s not terribly common.
The procedure typically costs between $2,000 and $5,000, and takes about 10 minutes under local anesthesia. It can look artificial while it heals, which takes from one week to one month, but then it will look like a natural dimple whenever the patient smiles.
On the other hand, there are those who have dimples they don’t want. These patients can request a procedure that involves releasing the skin-to-muscle connection that causes the dimple, followed by an injectable filler to help lift out the dent.
