I’ve Been Using Clinique’s New Daily Calm Collection for Two Months—Here’s What Happened to My Sensitive Skin

The brand just launched its most targeted line yet for reactive skin, and the results are hard to argue with.

If you have sensitive skin, you know the drill: A new product launches, it promises to be gentle and then your face travels on a whole other journey. Redness, tightness, that telltale flush that shows up right when you least want it to. For me, even at 47, that clocks in at two weeks or more, easily.

So, when Clinique invited editors to its brand offices to test the Daily Calm collection—a line built specifically for very sensitive, reactive skin—I was cautiously optimistic. I’ve been a fan of the brand’s no-nonsense, fragrance-free approach for years (who hasn’t?), but this felt different. More targeted, more considered, yet, somehow, dare I say it, more for the reactive-skin skeptics like me.

Ahead, I'm breaking down everything in the collection, including the science, the lineup and what it was actually like to use.

Why Now?

According to Janet Pardo, Clinique’s SVP of Product Development, the timing wasn’t accidental. “More than ever, skin is exposed to environmental aggressors, pollutants, allergens and daily lifestyle stressors that can compromise the skin barrier and heighten visible reactivity,” she says. “The Daily Calm line was developed in response to the growing number of consumers who identify as having sensitive, very sensitive or sensitized skin and are looking for products that feel both effective and reassuring to use.”

The collection builds on what Clinique already does best—allergy-tested, 100-percent fragrance-free, dermatologist tested—but takes it further, with formulas designed to address visible redness, discomfort and reactivity to environmental stressors. In other words: everything my skin has been dealing with lately.

The Lineup

The collection is refreshingly streamlined: four products, each with a clear purpose. The Daily Calm Gentle Cream Cleanser handles cleansing. The Daily Calm Soothing Repair Cream focuses on barrier repair. The Daily Calm Makeup Balm visibly evens the complexion. And the Daily Calm Lip + Cheek Color adds a wash of comfortable color.

That last one surprised me. I didn’t expect a sensitive-skin line to include makeup. But Pardo is straightforward with the thinking: “Formulating makeup for sensitive skin requires balancing two expectations that are often seen as competing: high performance and high tolerability. We focused on delivering the sensorial and cosmetic benefits consumers expect—good wear, elegant finish, lightweight feel and reliable payoff—while being extremely disciplined about ingredient selection.” The goal, she says, was “to prove that makeup can be both beautiful to wear and thoughtfully designed for sensitivity and safety.” Fair enough—and honestly, it shows.

The Science Behind It

At the heart of Daily Calm is an ingredient called Uniflavon—and this is where things get interesting. “Unilavon works by interrupting the skin’s irritation cascade by two key stages,” Pardo explains. “It helps calm the rapid reaction that can lead to signs of sensitivity and fight against prolonged irritation triggers that can continue to stimulate sensitivity. As a result, skin feels soothed instantly and over time, visible redness is reduced and skin is more resilient to future irritation.”

The clinical testing was also more rigorous than your average product trial. Rather than relying on self-reported sensitive skin, Clinique used the BoSS (Burden of Sensitive Skin) Questionnaire to recruit panelists who objectively met a threshold for very sensitive skin—with visible and sensorial symptoms including redness, dryness, tightening and discomfort. That kind of precision in testing matters.

What I Actually Thought

I started with the Gentle Cream Cleanser, which does exactly what it says—no stripping, no tight feeling post-rinse, just clean skin. The Soothing Repair Cream is the star of the lineup for me, a rich hydrator that isn’t heavy, and within a few days I noticed my skin looked less reactive in the morning—less of that baseline redness I’d come to accept as normal.

The Makeup Balm was the real revelation. Lightweight, breathable and genuinely evening—it’s the kind of product I have been using daily (sometimes, twice a day) and I have honestly gone through two. I have never been a fan of foundation, yet I am someone who is undeniably red, so I need something. This is it—I cannot say enough good things about it. And, not to be the afterthought, but the Lip + Cheek Color delivers a natural flush that didn’t budge or irritate and is perfect for those of us who steer toward the no-makeup makeup look (with no makeup).

If you’ve ever felt like the sensitive-skin category was all promise and no delivery, Daily Calm is worth a closer look. It’s the rare line that seems to have been built with your skin’s worst days in mind, and designed to make them better.
