Fighting frizz can be an uphill battle—especially in the warmer, humidity-laden months. You get your style exactly how you want it in the morning, only to take a stroll outside and be met with strands that seem to have a mind of their own and are quickly relegated to ponytail territory. So how can you settle your unruly tresses and keep a smooth, sleek style that actually stays put? “Any kind of natural oil is great to look for when taming frizz,” says Edward Tricomi, master stylist and cofounder of Warren-Tricomi Salons. Here are three of our tested and true favorites:
You’ve definitely heard of this one, and Tricomi says it is still a great option to look for in your products. It has a ton of benefits, but for fighting frizz, it takes the cake for its ability to seal-in the cuticle, leaving strands smooth and able to stand up to even the most extreme cases of humidity.
Try: Moroccanoil Styling Gel. Some gel formulas successfully fight frizz, but also leave your hair completely stiff and sticky. This hydrating, shine-inducing one doesn’t, thanks to the company’s proprietary argan oil–infused blend, aloe leaf juice, chamomile flower extract and rosemary leaf. As an added bonus, you can actually apply it to your scalp to help soothe it. $22, moroccanoil.com
Agave may immediately come to mind as an ingredient in tequila, and you’ve probably heard of it used as a nectar, but its beauty benefits from something lesser-known are really impressive. The plant produces something called saponins (they are actually meant to ward off the plant’s predators), a natural detergent and surfactant that makes its application in botanical-based hair products a no-brainer. These saponins are also high in amino sugars, which can help lock-in moisture and form bonds to proteins to help strengthen hair.
Try: Agave Healing Vapor Iron. It may look like your standard flat iron, but when you add in a few drops of the company’s Vapor Infusion (a thermally-activated, leave-in conditioner packed with agave plant sugar extracts) to the tiny compartment on the side and run it through your hair, the result is more of an at-home treatment that not only conditions and fights frizz, but also leaves hair totally soft to the touch.
This traditional African oil has just about every vitamin out there (A, D, E, F), fatty acids, antioxidants and omegas. It’s more of a lightweight, easy-to-absorb oil when extracted, but it is highly moisturizing and particularly good for helping improve hair’s elasticity (split ends equal more frizz).
Try: Topganic Treat Hair Mask. This deliciously scented tub of treatment never weighs hair down, but always leaves it looking a lot better thanks to baobab, jojoba oil and vitamin B5. Use it on days you just want to wash and go—even on non-flat ironed, non-blown out strands, hair will look smooth and soft when it dries. $12, topganic.com
