You never forget your first time, and when it came to my first laser skin-resurfacing treatment, that old adage holds true. I’ve done all the research and written about so many skin-perfecting treatments you’d think I’d have undergone a laser treatment by now. However, as someone in my mid-40’s I was way overdue for some skin resurfacing. Since it’s officially laser season and the time is right to target my hyperpigmentation issues, West Palm Beach, FL dermatologist Kenneth Beer, MD recommended I try out the Clear + Brilliant Perméa, gentler fractional laser treatment that helps reduce skin pigmentation and discoloration.
As my newly lasered skin healed for about 10 days after, I found myself needing specifically formulated products meant to soothe, calm, nourish and protect post-treatment skin. Getting to glowier skin was easy with these standouts that really work to help red, inflamed, resurfaced and sensitive skin recover.
Alastin Regenerating Skin Nectar ($195) is a pre and post skin-treatment essential for a reason. This was a must to prep before my laser as it features Tri-Hex technology that helps not only soothe and calm, but also clears out damaged collagen and protein cells in order to promote faster healing. I’ve used it before and after a microneedling treatment with great results, so it was a no-brainer to also incorporate into my pre and post laser routine.
During my Clear + Brilliant laser treatment Dr. Beer used his ScientificRX Mega-Vitamin C and Ferulic Antioxidant Serum ($103) which is a powerful skin brightener. “Because the laser helps to create microchannels in the skin that immediately start to heal post-procedure to stimulate the skin-remodeling process, whatever serums you apply immediately after will absorb better into the skin and help optimize results,” Dr. Beer explained. This serum features a blend of vitamin C which helps to diminish discoloration, as well as niacinamide and ferulic acid to defend against skin aging.
This La Roche Posay Anthelios AOX Daily Antioxidant Serum with Sunscreen ($43) provides a gentle protection that won’t irritate skin while allowing you to smooth fine lines and wrinkles with powerful antioxidants. I love that it’s a simple step that lets you continue your anti-aging routine while letting your skin recover without triggering a reactive response.
Avene Cicalfate + Restorative Protective Cream ($28) acts like a cocoon and is so thick and nourishing it helped get me through the sandpaper-like skin phase the week immediately after treatment.
On day one after treatment you can start wearing a light, tinted moisturizer to give skin an even look while it heals. My go-to, Glo Skin Beauty C-Shield Anti-Pollution Moisture Tint SPF 30 ($47), is a 3-in-1 moisturizer, SPF and skin brightener with natural mineral pigments that offer a sheer, but buildable, coverage.
Remove impurities and makeup with zero harshness with Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm ($112) removes impurities, makeup and grime while treating skin with added hydration. It’s so gentle and soothing, I couldn’t imagine using anything else for those first few days after treatment.
Keeping Furtuna Skin’s Rinascita Delle Olive Replenishing Balm ($185) on my nightstand was a good call. Its blend of wild foraged botanical ingredients—all sourced from the brand’s Sicilian estate—not only calms stressed skin, but also provides a protective layer as it heals. I used it most nights as an evening ritual and let the solid cerulean-blue formulation melt right into my skin before bed.
