Spring is finally here, and so is the fourth installment of the now-sustainable Nicky Hilton x French Sole collection at Maison de Mode—a luxury ethical fashion platform cofounded by Hilton’s longtime friend, Amanda Hearst. (Bonus: In honor of Earth Month, the brand will be donating 10 percent of April sales to Well Beings Charity, an environmental and animal welfare organization.) The 37-year-old mom of two recently sat down with us to chat sustainability, adventures in family recycling and her current go-to skin-care routine.

What made you make the move to have this sustainable push in the line?

NH: I have wanted to create a sustainable footwear line for quite a few years, but the materials in the marketplace were just not what they are now. We found this wonderful factory in Spain that is able to create the materials we need using 100-percent sustainable, cruelty-free materials, so it was just a matter of the right stars aligning. I’m very excited to finally share these shoes with the world!

What would most people be surprised to hear goes into the creation of the shoes?

NH: Working with sustainable materials was something completely new to me. It was very cool to see how creative some of the materials are. I particularly was impressed by the large variety of different soles made out of recycled plastic bottles.

How else are you eco-friendly in your day-to-day?

NH: I do a variety of everyday things, like taking shorter showers, making sure lights are turned off in rooms that no one is in. We as a family are also very adamant about recycling and even drive 30 minutes to Long Island to drop off our recyclables. My daughters even have fun with the idea of reusing recyclable materials and have made things like a princess throne.

How important is sustainability to your beauty routine?

NH: I try to use clean products that are good for the environment. One of my favorite brands, U Beauty, is a clean line that I love. All of their packaging and bottles are recycled and for every sale the company makes, they plant a tree. I love supporting businesses that aren’t harmful for the environment.

You’ve shared that you have every “lotion and potion” out there. What are some current favorites?

NH: I love U Beauty, Costa Brazil, Dr. Barbara Sturm and Augustinus Bader. These are all clean lines that I love using in my everyday skin-care routine.
