Lily Collins is known for her long hair—at least, she was. On Monday, June 24, the 35-year-old actress stunned fans by stepping out with a blunt bob for the world premiere of A24’s MAXXXINE in Hollywood, and it’s nothing short of chic.
“I honestly just wanted to change things up again and surprise myself,” she said of the big chop in an interview with Vogue. “It’s not necessarily for a role.” Her new bob lands just below the chin, with her hairstylist parting it off-center for the red carpet event. If her hair looks a bit darker, that’s because her colorist, Jacob Schwartz, gave her a slightly deeper brunette shade to complement her fresh summer haircut.
“Changing my hair always brings out different sides of my personality, and I love playing around,” she added. “This cut and color feels bolder and yet somehow lighter. And completely more me—right now.”
“I hadn’t seen Lily for a while, and when she sat down in the chair, she said, ‘What’s our next look?’” the Emily in Paris star’s hairstylist, Gregory Russell, told the outlet. “We had the long hair for some time, and we did layers, bangs, face-framing…we did a lot. We thought this would be a chic switch-up.”
Ahead of the big chop, Collins posted a photo with a cryptic caption on her Instagram feed. In the first image, she’s all smiles with her long hair down. The second photo is a straightforward shot of the back of her head and her long brown hair. The caption read: “Good(bye) hair day…”
Naturally, her 28-plus million Instagram followers flocked to the comments section with haircut requests. Many hoped she would go even shorter. “Please bring your amazing pixie cut back this time!!” one fan wrote. Another commented, “Are you teasing a surprise pixie haircut loading..”
Collins may not have gone as short as some people wished, but she’s already been there and done that. She sported a pixie cut in 2015. “This is fully representative of who I am now, and I made this choice for me,'” she told Bustle, reflecting on the dramatic chop in 2023. “Everyone asked [at the time I got my pixie cut], ‘Oh what role are you doing?’ I’m like, ‘No, this is for me.'”)
