Makeup artists, hairstylists and photographers will agree: makeup can work wonders for celebrities. And of course, for real women too. It hides imperfections, enhances your features and can allow you to feel like a human being on those days when you feel less-than-your-best.
Women with lighter features-light skin, eyelashes, and eyes-can especially brighten their face with the right makeup. Case in point: Julianne Moore.
Here is how she can go from regular to ravishing:
Start with a clear canvas
Over-the-counter products that contain skin-lightening ingredients like mallow extract and kojic acid are effective in minimizing the appearance of freckles and brown spots-but retinols and AHAs can be effective at lightening spots as well. Products with flavonoids also help even out the appearance of freckles before applying foundation makeup, so you can start with a more flawless canvas.
Then, apply yellow-based foundation to reduce redness, while masking the appearance of freckles and blemishes.
Play up the eyes
In order to keep the face in balance, especially when concealing redness, it’s important to highlight other facial features-like the eyes. “Making Julianne’s eyes the focus enhances the face without enhancing the redness,” says celebrity makeup artist Aldo Celeste. To give a “pop” to the eyes: take water resistant black eyeliner and apply it under the top lashes on the waterline, extending it past the lashes a little on the outside corner. Then, curl the lashes with a lash curler and apply black mascara, wiggling the wand as you apply your mascara to avoid clumping.
Fill in your brows. “The best way to fill in sparse brows is with brow powder. Try using one that comes packaged with a few different tones so that you can match it perfectly to your brows,” says Cat Tatman, director of marketing for GloMinerals.
Go light with lips
Use a soft-colored lip gloss to lend more focus to the eyes.
