Thanks to hot tools, dye jobs and general day-to-day abuse, healthy hair can be super hard to come by, however, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to achieve. While dried-out, brittle hair may feel (and look!) like it’s unsalvageable, one Reddit user named capslockramen is proof there is hope for overly fried locks.

In a recent before-and-after post on Reddit, capslockramen explained how she disregarded her hair’s health completely while in high school: “I got a relaxed curl perm, bleached it blonde, and straightened my hair 5–6 days a week, without using quality heat protectant.” However, once capslockramen went off to college, her hair care routine completely changed. “When I left for college, I stopped frequently using hot irons of any kind, only straightening my hair every few months,” she continued. “I let my bleach blonde and the relaxed perm grow out and cut the dead and dry parts off every three months.”

While letting her hair grow out certainly helped her strands appear healthier, she also credits a few key products for ensuring that those curls continue to look their best. Here’s her top choices: Miss Jessie’s Multi-Cultural Curls Cream ($16) and Cantu Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream ($7). But that’s not all, she also only uses a cotton t-shirt to squeeze out excess water from her hair after showering and uses a diffuser on the warm (not hot!) setting to dry her hair.

While this recovery method is obviously a good one, capslockramen doesn’t want credit for it: “Other curly haired people, particularly people of color, have been using these techniques and products for years,” she explained. “I owe my success with this method to them, specifically my college roommates, who have shared their techniques and products with me over the last four years.”

So, there you have it. The journey for healthy hair is a long one, but the results are worth the wait.
