It’s pretty much impossible to think about Elizabeth Arden without associating it with its cult-classic ceramide capsules. For as long as I’ve accompanied my mother to the beauty counter, the one staple we came home with, without fail, on every shopping trip was a jar of these magic serum capsules.
It’s been roughly a decade and a half since the last time I went beauty shopping with my mom, yet she’s still loyal as ever to the classic product. Formulated with a potent and effective mix of ceramides, vitamin A and vitamin E, these single-dose treatments help to hydrate and plump skin, giving the complexion a younger, smoother and less-lined appearance. But while this product is practically the definition of “oldie but goodie,” 27 years (and some technological advances) later, Elizabeth Arden is giving it an upgrade.

“Research shows that while ceramides are critical to the stratum corneum, other lipids such as cholesterol and fatty acids play an important role as well, and all three together are essential to a healthy -looking skin barrier,” explains Janet Curmi, vice president of Elizabeth Arden global education and development. “Based on this information, in the new Advanced Ceramide Capsules formula we adjusted the combination of these lipids, with new and elevated levels of skin-identical ceramides, higher levels of fatty acids, and a new ingredient, cholesterol, to further help support this outer layer of skin.”
We’ve previously reported that cholesterol is an essential lipid that helps maintain a strong barrier in the skin. This ingredient is particularly important for women over the age of 40, as skin’s natural levels of cholesterol start to deplete, leading to dryness and a crepey texture.
Elizabeth Arden has confirmed that the new juiced-up capsules will replace the original formulation. Until the phase-out is complete, make sure to ask for the “Advanced” capsules next time you visit the beauty counter.
