If You're Vegan or Have High Cholesterol, but Love Cheese, You'll Go Nuts for This
By Brittany Burhop Fallon, Beauty Director |
A few years ago, I learned I had high cholesterol after a routine blood test. I was in my late 20s and thought, how is this possible? Turns out, I love cheese a little too much. And, unfortunately, high cholesterol runs in my family. Over time, I've made adjustments to my diet, but I've never been able to part with cheese, in any form. Needless to say, when I discovered Kite Hill, I just about went nuts.
Plant-based, vegan and made from artisan almond milk, Kite Hill cream cheeses are the best-tasting "faux cheeses" I've ever come across. There are three flavors—Plain, Chive and Jalapeño (it tastes like pepper jack)—and they have the same consistency as traditional cream cheese, but wait for it...NO cholesterol! Plus, they all contain zero sugar. You can spread them on bagels, crackers, veggies, or pretty much anything.

Here's a quick look at the nutritional info:
A 1 oz. serving of both the Chive and Plain flavors has 78 calories, 6 grams of fat, 3 grams of carbs and 3 grams of protein.
A 1 oz. serving of Jalapeño has 80 calories, 7 grams of fat, 1 gram of carbs and 2 grams of protein, as well as 1 gram of dietary fiber.
The brand also makes a dairy-free ricotta cheese, which can easily be substituted for the real thing. I love to drizzle it with creamed honey and serve it with toasted baguettes. You can even use it in your upcoming holiday dessert recipes, like pumpkin cheesecake.
You can find the product lineup at Whole Foods and prices start at $6. Believe me, you will shock all of the guests at your next party when you tell them these delicious cheeses aren't "real."
