When you think about the signs and symptoms of menopause, what age do you typically associate them with? Late 40s? Early 50s? Believe it or not, menopause can start much earlier, but the condition is often overlooked or brushed to the side thanks to the stereotypes surrounding the major life change both in our culture and in modern medicine. If you’ve ever struggled with or questioned the changes happening to your aging reproductive system, you’ll want to hear about 2 Broke Girls Beth Behrs’ experience discovering she had begun perimenopause at just 39.
Beth Behrs On Perimenopause and Hot Flashes
Menopause, perimenopause and all the symptoms that come along with them are no joke, but for comedic actress Beth Behrs, her discovery began as somewhat of a bit. On CBS Mornings today, Behr got real about how getting a hot flash on The Drew Barrymore Show led her to finally understand her confusing physical symptoms as early signs of menopause.
“What happened was, I put it on Instagram that I had a hot flash meeting Drew Barrymore, which was funny so we included it, and Tichina Arnold was with me and she was like ‘Welcome. I’ve been dealing with this for eight years.'” Behr recounts of her perimenopause journey. “Then I got all these comments because I’m only 39, and it’s just not talked about. I had all these male doctors tell me ‘You’re too young, it’s not [menopause],’ or ‘Oh its just fibroids’ or ‘You’re just stressed,’ and it’s like, no! I started getting all these Instagram messages from women being like ‘I started at 33’ or ‘I started at 35,'” the actress says on finding solidarity in her experience. “It’s not researched, and people aren’t talking about it, so I’m really glad that I’m a chatty Cathy about it.” So are we, Beth.
