When it comes to gray hair, we can look to our family tree for insight on how our hair will age. After all, it is an inevitable part of growing old. Since the pandemic, we’ve seen an increasing number of women embracing their gray, white and silver strands. But, surveys show that the majority of women still prefer covering them up. Arey, a hair-care company focused on anti-gray solutions, has been at the forefront of innovation in this space. Recently, the brand shared results of a clinical study that analyzed its products in a way that hadn’t been done before. Here’s the scoop.

The Clinical Study + Results

So what makes this study different? Arey conducted the first and only randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study on the appearance of gray hair. I’m no scientist, but I do know that this is the gold standard of clinical trials for the beauty industry. Essentially, study participants randomly get put into two groups. An experimental group receives the product and a control group gets a placebo. Both the researchers and the study subjects don’t know who gets what. In this case, the product was Arey’s System: its Not Today, Grey supplement and To The Root scalp serum. The study was conducted over the course of six months.

“To my knowledge, no randomized, double-blind placebo controlled trial has been conducted in people with gray hair,” says Arey’s chief medical advisor Kenneth Conrad, MD. “That study showed an impressive statistically significant effect, with 88 percent of subjects in the active System group showing no progression of gray hair compared to baseline. Those positive effects were seen by counting gray hairs and were confirmed by a separate photographic analysis. There were also positive findings in the secondary endpoints of hair thickness, fullness and shine. Importantly, the products were well-tolerated with no serious adverse events. It is encouraging to know that we can have a positive impact on graying and aging hair.”

Not only did participants see an average of 13 percent less gray hair when using Arey’s method, but the placebo subjects actually saw a 10-percent increase in gray hair. “Arey really put this two-product system to the test in a robust study design,” says Nancy D. Rodgers, PhD, the principal investigator for the trial. “The results demonstrate that it is possible to slow down the graying process and even repigment already gray hair.”

The Future of Gray Hair

“Our research represents a significant leap forward in how we address gray hair,” says Jay Small, a trichologist and cofounder of Arey. “For the hair-care community and our valued consumers, this means a shift toward more effective, evidence-based solutions. Our study not only validates our approach, but also sets a new precedent in proactively managing aging hair from the inside out and outside in.”
