Curly-haired icon Andie MacDowell switched up her normal style this week, opting for a super sleek blowout while attending Hallmark Channel’s The Way Home Season 3 Emmys FYC Screening and Panel in Los Angeles. And we have all the insider glam secrets to getting the style.

“On damp hair, I used L’Oréal Tecni.Art Liss Control ($32) to help with controlling frizz and Transformer Lotion ($32) to help with smoothing out Andie’s hair for the blowout,” shares celebrity hairstylist Marcus Francis. “To create bouncy waves, after the blowout and iron work, I used a small amount of the Liss Control to seal the ends. Then, I sprayed with Tecni.Art infinium 3 hairspray ($32) to lock in the texture and shape.”

While there was some speculation swirling around that MacDowell may have colored her gray locks, Francis says any color shift was all thanks to the mega-watt shine.

“The light reflects on straight hair differently, so it picked up on all those pieces at the nape that haven’t turned silver yet,” he says. “She stopped coloring her hair five years ago when she decided to let the gray come out back at the start of COVID.”

It’s a move the actress told us about in her 2024 cover shoot that she wishes she had done earlier.

”To be honest, I wanted to let it go gray earlier, but I was afraid,” MacDowell said. “I finally got the courage during COVID when I saw it with my eyes and my skin color. Once it was growing out, I could see what the color was going to be like, and I really loved it. I knew it was time. For me, it’s fascinating that it’s such a curiosity and interest to people. I think also, it’s important to stop and think about that interest and curiosity— because it wouldn’t happen if I was a man. It happens because I’m a woman. We have to look at that. We have to look at why there’s interest in me having silver hair, because if I were a man, there would be no question I had silver hair, right?”

While the interest around her hair color may be perplexing, MacDowell did admit she’s a big fan of the silver shade. “I’m lucky. I think it’s a really good shade. Just the other day, someone asked me where I got my hair color, which was interesting. I told them, ‘I don’t color my hair.’ They said, ‘It looks like that?’ I said, ‘Yes, that’s what it looks like!’”
