Here’s some news for dieters. It turns out there’s another reason why you either overeat or stop yourself from overindulgence. It all has to do with those tiny taste buds on your tongue that allow you to experience the big, delicious flavors that life has to offer.

A while back savory (or umami) was added to the traditional list of taste that the human tongue can perceive. So that leaves us with sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and savory. But wait! A brand new taste has been added: fatty.

So how does this affect you? A study suggests that those who are more sensitive to this taste can detect trace amounts of fattiness, and therefore consume less fatty foods. On top of that, they also have lower BMIs. For a person who is sensitive to this taste, the mind triggers a response to stop eating the food once they’ve had enough, or too much of it.

The study also revealed that you can develop a tolerance for fat. The more fatty flavors you consume, the less responsive you become to it, and this causes you to over-indulge.
